    Exclamation Problem installing hard drive.

I had an old Maxtor 10gb EIDE hard drive that I sold to a friend, and I installed it for him earlier today. I installed it fine, but when I booted the machine, the CDROM drive wasn't recognized(the HDD worked fine). I had to install the HDD on the same channel as the CDROM drive, because the channel with the primary hard drive only had one connecter. I didn't have any jumpers connected to the hard drive, could this be a problem?

    Thanks,
    -Dennis

It dosent matter all the time, but most require it, Try putting the HDD slave, if that dosent work get a jumper for the CD drive
some tin foil can help if you dont have a jumper

I mean the CD drive set to slave, the the HDD with no jumpers, also if the HDD on the first channel is on its own try nicking that jumper

I am a little confused. you say you had to connect the hdd to the same calble as the Cdrom, why?? isn't there a secondary ide port? that is usually what the cdrom is connected to. unless it is a 486 and it only has one ide port. in this case you will need to have a jumper on the hard drive because if you don't it will act like it is the only one in the system. You will need to get a jumper and set the HDD to master and cdrom as slave. this configuration really hinders the system. Being on the same channel it can only read as fast as the HDD will let it.

the primary HDD only had one connector?? you mean the cable only had one plug-in to hook the HDD up to it? cable aren't that much maybe 5 bucks if that, unless you can find an old one.

Tin foil Simon?? that is funny, what's that smell, oh crap where it that smoke coming from

    Jumpers & cables.

If you set the jumpers correctly and attach the cables porperly, you can have a hard drive and a CD reader share the same IDE Port.

First, The Master Device has to be at the end of the cable, and the slave must use the middle connector. If you get this wrong, I am not sure what goes wrong, but it would not surprise if the system did not see the slave if at the end of the cable.

I am not sure, but think I read somewhere, that a master-slave pair runs at the speed of the slowest device. This might be the reason for putting hard drives on the same IDE port, which is generally recommended.

I would buy a cable with two connectors and put the two hard drives on the same port.

BTW: If you have the new Hard drive and CD device on same port, you must have a cable with two connectors. Why not swap cables? Use the dual connector cable for the two hard drives and the single connector cable for the CD reader?

Also, the C-Drive must always be a stand alone or the master on the primary port. If you put both hard drives on the same port, make sure you get this correct. Drive with OS is master at end of cable on primary port.

There's a computer repair and resale store by me (computer renaissance) that has "misc computer parts" packs for like 5.50. They include a bunch of screws, standoffs, and jumpers. Look near you, there might be a similar store that can help. Make sure the drive at the very end of the cable is set to slave. (i think, right?)

    Master at end.

dapavster45: Master IDE device must be at end of the cable, with the slave plugged into the middle connector on the cable.

For hard disks, C-Drive will be on primary port master device.
