How much will it cost?
Does anyone know how much the full release of VS.NET Enterprise (not just VB.NET) will cost? Well over £1000 I imagine?

I wuold guess it would be close to what the VS6 equivalent sells for, maybe a little higher because its new, but MS can't charge too much or else people just won't upgrade.

Get these: Mozilla Opera OpenBSD
I have books for sale: "MCSD in a Nutshell" and "VB Distributed Exam Cram" - PM me for details. Will also trade for a decent ATX Pentium 2 MB/CPU/RAM combo.

Yeah, that's what I figured. Hopefully I'll be able to afford it, cos I'm getting quite turned on by the sound of it

I hope I'll be able to get it with an academic licence. It shouldn't cost more than $200 then.
I can get VS6 for under $100, so I guess $200 is a safe estimate.

Damn! THAT much? That's like almost ƒ5000 (NLG), I didn't think it would be over ƒ2000 (NLG)! VS6 Enterprise was about that in retail here last month.

Thats one of the few advantages of being a student...
as well as:

Long Summers
We only spend 1/2 the year working
No stress
Altho there is one major disadvantage:
No pay!!!!

We've gotta do the same, but luckily(?) I'm only taking my GCSEs this summer (well... only 4 left now - yay!), so I've got two more years of saving before I have to start paying...
Altho I might take a year out unless one of the **many** big multinational banks over here wants to finance my studies (another great advantage of living on a tax haven, apart from no VAT), or perhaps a IT company... ah well... the year out will be able to pay for me to stay as a student for longer... hehehe

Well, I'm not sure it'll be that much, but seeing as VS6 is about £1200, I'm guessing it'll be a bit more. Don't forget, I live in the UK, and everything is about 10x more expensive here than in Holland

Why don't you import it from Holland then? And by the way, your wages are also higher then here, so it not nearly as much money as it seems to me.

Hehehe
Would the reason be VAT???
I don't get that... lol!!!! But I do get all the other benefits of living in the British Isles
Lol... over here we get even higher wages cos of the finance industry and cheap petrol (which they don't get in the UK - lol!!!)
Pity neither of those affect me for another hmm... 89days in the petrol case and about 15 in the wages.

**sympathetically** What???
Its one of the very few occassions where this place is actually better than somewhere else on more than one thing! So I'm kinda bragging while I can.

In OZ they are claiming slightly more expensive than the version 6 releases. Of course you then have the cost of downloading what will probably be numerous service packs

Well actually I figure that VB.NET will cost about $3.50 CND....
Thank God for CD-Rs...
If you don't want to pay that much... then don't!

No need to be a student...... Just go to a computer show.
Got me Office 2000 developer for $200.00. I think it goes for $950.00 normally.

What does that mean? You can't use the IDE on 9x systems? All the better. Or does it mean you can't use .NET programs on 9x systems? All BAD!

Yeah, Microsoft makes more money if it can force you to upgrade your OS. Programs created with .NET will not run on computers without the .NET runtimes installed, which means they won't run on a clean install of any of MS's current OSes.

What actually is this ".NET"? From what I've read, and read between the lines and such its seems like a VB.NET VM! Any comments...
PS nullus software usually comes out cracked (ie. 0-Day) before they are commercially available. If you don't belive me check out MIRC.

i think i read on the MS site that you won't be able to run .NET on 9x systems, although you will be able to run programs created with it on 9x systems. they said it was to do with allowing programmers to get the best performance from it. bull****! like JoshT said, they just want the $$$
CaptainPinko, really? well i think i'll just be honest and get the licensed version anyway

Runtime Fees
Hey there Adam!
Actually, the runtimes are *completely free*. The .NET Framework will be issued without charge.
So in essence, you're only paying for the IDE... meaning you could simply use Notepad if you're on a tight budget!
Admittedly, you wouldn't get all the features... <ahem>... but it'd still work.
Curious, eh?

Notepad doesn't include a compiler, so you won't be able to compile your project into Intermediate Language.
Your program will not work without this.

The framework does include command-line compilers, just no IDEs.
