    Question Beer with the boss!

What is the etiquette at such events?

How much should you consume if the event is being held on office premises?

How much if it is being held at a local watering hole?

Do you have events like these at the place where you work?

You should follow the same rule as for presentations. In a presentation, you want to be slightly better dressed than your audience. When drinking with the boss, you want to be slightly more in the bag.

Depends on if you're driving afterwards... in which case, less than the legal allowable limit.

Other than that, it depends on the type of company... is this a normal thing? Is the boss paying? Is it to celebrate something or just to get let off some steam or to just get out?

if all else fails. go with your gut... have only a couple and see how it goes... then wait to see how it goes in the office the next day... that should then drive any future actions...

The boss is paying. I am driving and the event is over.
    I had one.

I hate and love it when someone else picks up the tab. Hate it because I always feel guilty about ordering what I really want to drink (which is usually the pricier stuff), love it because my wallet isn't empty when I leave heh.

Every now and then I'll head down to a local bar down the street with my boss. Usually we'll toss back a couple of 22's before calling it a night. Been a couple of nights I can think of where I had to call a cab, but those were special occasions.
Where I'm from we only have one bit of advice for new comers: "If you hear banjos, turn and run".

This wasn't a one-on-one with my boss. This is an annual event at the firm I work for. So the entire company gathers around in the company parking lot once a year and the CEO and the top execs serve beer. The event is titled "beer with the boss".

There are some games at these events like "baggo", "ping pong", "frisbee" etc. Overall it was a fun event. I couldn't make it to the past three events. This time I attended.

The one who has the gold, makes the rules.
    Rules for working here:
    1. The boss is always right.
    2. If the boss is wrong, see rule 1.
    *****
Never try to out witt, out drink, tell better stories...unless you have years together (5 +)
He/she is the boss for a reason. When I was 28 , I asked my boss if he would like have drinks after work.
He said, "No thank you, I might have to fire you, I don't think I ever will need to, but I might. Being friends on this level would complicate our working relationship."

That was twenty years ago. We both moved on to other challenges, and are still friends. I re-wired his house three years ago, he sells light bulbs to the largest consumer of everything.

    Re: Beer with the boss!

I noticed a trend at the event. The order in which beer is consumed is co-related to the quality of beer.

So this is the order in which the supply diminished.

    1) Stella Artois
    2) Blue Moon
    3) Sam Adams Ale
    4) Yuengling
    5) Miller lite
    6) Bud Lite.

    #5 and #6 were leftovers.

As much as I love stella, you guys are in PA, Yuengling should have gone out first! My personal favorite beer, but I guess that's because I grew up in Philly so it's all we drank.

Ah, I see, it's usually a bunch of us when we go out so it's not 1-1 per se, but it's not a company sponsored event. I think the only time we're allowed to drink alcohol at company events is the annual summer picnic and a xmas party if there is one (hasn't been since I started). Even then it's BYOB, but there have been many stories of our CEO and his penchant for crown royal so people do tend to drink a lot when they can

Wow: Pressure from Boss to drink beer at work + accident driving home = lawsuit.

I have a friend who used to work for an Ad company that had the account for a major whiskey. They got free samples in large quantities. They also did some of their design work stoned. From her description, drinking on the job was pretty much expected, and a bit of weed was quite acceptable. Therefore, the company was stoned and sloshed by noon each day.

As a business, did they make any money?

Sounds like an awesome job to me, a shortlived one, but an awesome one nonetheless. Mmm whiskey.

    Re: Beer with the boss!

My ex used to work as a game tester for Atari (They created Pong) in the early 70's. It was a great job especially for our kids who had access to dozens of console games in various stages of development, to say nothing of the arcade room that was free to employes and family anytime, but I digress. I just wanted to mention that it too was an 'anything goes' atmosphere including pot-smoking programmers riding their bikes up and down the hall. They could also bring dogs to work and amusingly one guy tried to get rid of his dog's accident by dousing it with lighter fluid and setting it on fire. Fun place to work

They did that at Microsoft as well when they were making Vista.

Yes except switch pot and alcohol with heavy psychedelics such as DMT and Bromo Dragonfly. Makes me wonder what they were smoking when they came up with windows ME.

Not to spoil chitchat with actual coherent thoughts, I'd go for "Me" any day if the only other option was Vista.

You, sir, are a sick and twisted individual then. As much as it pains me to say this, vista is far the superior OS compared to ME. ME was barely functional, I still think it was an april fools day prank taken to far.

Not sure, but they didn't even notice the recession until 2010....though only because they were all pig-faced drunk.

We have an event called "Bear with the boss" which is usually held all year long, the employees paying of course. And Shaggy's friend's company must've gone down the drain, hung over its past achievements.

I am waiting for a company which has a "bare with the boss" event. Should be fun. Even more so if I could be the bos.
