.Lic files
Hi all.
We have a legacy VB6 application that uses a bunch of 3rd party OCX controls that SOMEHOW about 6 years ago got "lost" from our file server. We think we know HOW they got "Lost" but have been unable to confirm our suspissions.
Anyway, we have a machine that had all the OCX's installed with the appropriate design time .lic files etc, BUT we need to rebuild that machine as its getting a little sick now.
We already know there will be issues if we try to use the OCX's at design time in VB6 and we get the errors about not having designtime lics etc, so is there a way we can register these .lic files on a new box or is there something in the registry we can export etc?
Thanks, Jeremy

Re: .Lic files
Hi... Welcome to the forums...
No. You should contact the respective companies from where you bought the OCX controls. They will provide some extra licensing for your new machine.

Re: .Lic files
You can get the free version of VMWARE and it can make a virtual machine out of your sick machine. Then it can live forever on a new host.

Re: .Lic files
Tried the VM option first. Its a Win2K machine and it just blue screens on use even tho we have run the "Configure Machine" process in the standalone converter, which was rather annoying !!

Re: .Lic files
Well you can do what akhil said, the companies should help, if they are still around. Your only other options are to copy the hard drive to a new machine or build a new machine and put the hard drive in it.
The licensing information can be stored any way the imagination can think of. You can spend a huge amount of time, and might not even get anywhere. Part of the problem is keeping with old tech. You may wish to consider re-writing in .NET. Eventually windows won't support those legacy applications.

Re: .Lic files
the problem is what if the HD goes?
as you can tell we have thought of most things already.
We are going to be re-writing the app. but not in .Net and the reason we have not done so already has been a combonation of time, resource and need, but now we have the need and resource and time, so its going to get sorted once and for all !! :-)
Anyway, we may have to try the vendors.
Thanks all.

That is why you back it up. If it goes, buy a new one and restore it.
