All of my apps are aimed at IT Administrators like myself, so unless you are doing a similar job there's probably not much point me explaining it as it won't make a lot of sense to you If you do want to see and read more etc, this is my website: http://www.cjwdev.co.uk/

Chris,
just had a look at your web site, which looks very nice by the way. What tools did you use to make it ?

Re: Making money from free applications
I bought it from one of those website template sites, it was only about $20 if I remember rightly and it looks 10 times better than anything I could ever make. I use MS Expression Web to edit and update it (there are probably better tools out there but that's part of my MSDN subscription so I figured I may as well use it, plus it costs me nothing).

Re: Making money from free applications
Nice site Chris and glad to hear things are doing well.
I think that when a person needs to download a program that its the optimum time to collect some revenue. once they have it its hard to get them to go back to "donate".
Having the nag screen is a good technique to get them to donate or purchase if they havent purchased already.
Placing a feature to check for updates is a good additional technique to get them to go back to the website which will invoke more ad views regardless if there is an update or not. Something as simple as the About menu having a clickable link to your site and that specific product page which sill state if there is a newer version for them. Perhaps pass a product id and version in the querystring so it can say "Upgrade from 1.5 to 2.0 is available".

Re: Making money from free applications
Yeah all of my apps already check for updates from my website when they launch, if there is an update it takes the user to the download page on the site
