call of duty: Black ops (PC)
got the game, like the game. I can't figure out how to change any graphical settings! I can go into the menu and make changes, but there isn't a save button, and when i leave the screen, nothing is kept. Anyone else on here have it?

Re: call of duty: Black ops (PC)
After setting the new settings, just give a hit from the top (on your PC). That might help it to swallow the "settings"
Just kidding...
I don't know how to save the settings in the new game (because I didn't get a copy to play). But I have played upto the series 5.
Very rich in graphics and got me addicted to it.
Did you tried asking the tech support of the game ?

Re: call of duty: Black ops (PC)
no but i did figure out a work around. I manually edited the settings in the cfg file which wasnt actually there until after i started a new game. Then this didn't actually work either. I then discovered that win7 was forcing the program to use a copy of the file in my user folder which i found odd considering it created the first copy of the file in the program files folder. I am now happily operating at 1920x1080.

Re: call of duty: Black ops (PC)
this is the first call of duty game for me. I rarely play war simulations, but this one isn't bad. It's also out on the wii. I viewed a couple of videos on it on youtube, and was amused by the comments about how much better the ps3 version looks or whatever. This is when i discovered it was out on pc. The pc version monkey-stomps the other versions. If you get it, edit the cfg file and enable multi-core processing then disable multiple-gpu support. I am not sure why they had it that way, but i am getting a much smoother experience now.

Re: call of duty: Black ops (PC)
The config settings file should be deep in the steam folder somewhere, something like "steamapps/call of duty black ops/players/config.cfg", or something similar. From memory (I only changed the settings once) you can just change the settings and then press ESC to go back and it should save them. If not you may have had your config file set to read-only (which is a bit strange to have that by default).
Just be glad you got the game this late, the first few weeks have been nothing but problems for a large percentage of the users. The game seemed very poorly optimized for the PC. It's a console port, and since console's rely on the CPU much more than on the GPU, the game did the same on the PC. So anyone without at least a fast quadcore CPU could hardly play. Luckily after two patches most of the problems are now solved.
It is a great game, but just like with any other game there are some annoyances. With this game however I can think of only three that really bug me:
- The RC-XD remote controlled car is just... annoying. It serves no real purpose (you have to be very lucky to get more than one kill, and that often takes 1-2 minutes of driving around in which time you could have gotten 5+ kills yourself and in which time you cannot do any objective work for your team). You get it at 3 kills which often means constant RC-XD spam.
- I hate people who play objective game modes (domination, demolition, etc), and then just completely ignore the objective and just play as if it was a team-deathmatch game. They only play it for two reasons: the matches are longer than TDM and the spawns are more predictable. This was bad in MW2 but in BO it is 10 times worse, I've seen people sitting 5 feet from a flag they could capture, but didn't. When I got down next to them to finally capture it, they start raging at me for revealing their position...
- 12-year old spoiled brats as server admins. Be sure not to get a high killstreak, cause you're gonna get your ass banned. Be sure not to destroy HIS high killstreak, because again, you're banned. Be sure not to kill the admin with anything else than the worst gun, cause then you are a noob and a cheater (oh yeah, and you're banned). I've been banned from at least 15 servers just because the admin can't take losing...
Oh yeah, and servers with stupid custom rules are annoying too. I can't use a grenade launcher, I can't sit still for more than 2 seconds (CAMPER!!1), I can't use a sniper, and yes even: I can't RUN... Seriously, there was one server where everyone had to crouch and you could not get up or you would get banned. Please...

That's because Activision, the publisher has two producers working on the call of duty series.
Infinity Ward has made call of duty 2, 4 and modern warfare 2.
Treyarch built call of duty world at war and black ops. (if i recall they also made a call of duty 3, but never released for pc)
Personally I dislike the Treyarch game engine. If you got a pc that has nearly double the recommended power you can run it.
Having merely the recommended specs, you're screwed.
I'm not really sure whether Activision will be releasing a modern warfare 3, as the lead developers from Infinity Ward were fired and are suing to get the rights for the modern warfare series.
EDIT: did some reading on the lawsuits and discovered Activision is now actually suing EA.
Don't know how that other lawsuit ended up.
Delete it. They just clutter threads anyway.

i don't know why, but even though my version came with the steam install, it's not saving the config file in the steam folder. I frankly am flummoxed because it seems to be making mistakes in file placement that went out with xp. Putting the config file in a program files/program directory is not allowed in 7.

All Call of Duty games have put the config files in that same location, in fact all games on the Q3 engine do this. The config file is not something that a typical user would need to see (only if you want to edit your settings beyond what the GUI allows in the game) so putting it in My Documents would be a bit silly.
(I also have 7 by the way).
