How much does a 'ticket' cost?

The thread about avoiding a ticket got me thinking. How much does a ticket cost in your country/state?

Since speeding limits and laws vary, lets put the description of the penalty along with the cost.

To start things of, here are a few:

    1. Not wearing a seatbelt - 50 Euros (67 USD)
    2. Going 21-50 km/h (13-30 mph) over the limit in a 50 km/h (30 mph) zone - 60-200 Euros (80-270 USD), mandatory lose the license at least 30 days, and add 5 points to your driving license... if no accident was caused by doing so. If it was, the penalties are doubled.
    3. Driving through a red light - 150-300 Euros (200-400 USD), 6 points on your license, lose the license for at least 3 months. Doubled if by doing so you cause an accident or endanger others.
    4. Refusing an alco/drug test - Mandatory at least 15 days in prison, 14 points on your license and lose the license for at least 8 months.

If you collect 18 points you lose the license for up to two years. After the judge rules for how long you lose it and that passes, you have to wait 3 more months, then you have to take special courses about driving safety, get a physical exam, pass another test on driving and safety, and only after all that can you get a license again. Each time you reach the limit, the limit on your next license is reduced by 3 points.

To put things into perspective, the average monthly salary is 350 Euros (470 USD).

Re: How much does a 'ticket' cost?

I got a speeding ticket this year. 56 in a 35 mph zone in the Shelby. Cost me $425 for court fees and another $75 in traffic school and certificate fees. Total cost $500

A friend got a modified exhaust ticket and its costing him $1,200

Another friend got a speeding ticket for going 112 in a 65 mph zone and only the court fee so far is $1,400. Sure there will be more fees and community service or jail time. Suspended license possibility too.

Re: How much does a 'ticket' cost?

I got a speeding ticket (12 over) a few years ago in Jackson, MI and it was $100

Overall with the insurance raise cause of the ticket, I think it costed me a little over $2000

I'm currently waiting for a ruling on a ticket from example #2. I'm not sure what, if any, court costs would be on top of the ticket cost that I posted.

Several years ago I got one for an expired parking meter - think it was $50 - and more recently I've gotten one for not turning my wheels toward the curb when parked on a hill - it was $47.

Feels like I got off cheap compared to the rest of the thread.

I got a speeding ticket twenty years ago. I forget the amount, but it was probably about $50.

Are exhaust mods illegal in Cali, or am I missing what you mean? I personally have a Flowmaster kit on the Silverado SS and the wife has a Magnaflow kit on the Charger SRT-8.

Strangely enough, I've never gotten a speeding ticket (wife either). I've done up to 120mph in the Charger before on the interstate, but only because I knew that part very well and exactly where the cops hide every time.

Re: How much does a 'ticket' cost?

Yes, its illegal to modify your exhaust with an exhaust system that is not C.A.R.B. legal or compliant. This is the vast majority of parts that are not compliant as for the manufacturer to get their part certified it needs to be low emissions and sound etc.

If you drive respectfully and lower RPMs then you usually have no problems. But some like to rev it up high when driving because it sounds so sick lol.

I have Magnaflow Catback system and an Tru X-Pipe with high flow cats and its loud and easily ticketable on the Shelby. on the Cobra I have a full Bassani system complete with Headers, high flow cats, x-pipe, mullflers and tips. It sounds completely raced out! I have to keep it under 2K RPMs to keep it under the noise level when passing cops. When its rev'ed up it can be heard for about 2 blocks lol

Re: How much does a 'ticket' cost?

Sounds like the UK has it easy. We have a fixed penalty notice system, your average (not speeding too much) speeding offence is £60 ($95), no summons involved unless you wish to dispute. You get 3 points of a maximum of 12 which expire after 3 years. That said, we do have a lot of cameras.

I'm a relatively cautious driver (not like a 75-year old in the fast line cautious), but I rarely go over 10 mph over the speed limit. When those few times I did get noticed, my license plates saved me... Retired Air Force & luckily for me that still garners some respect in our country. Have never had a speeding ticket since day 1. Seatbelt violation ($50-ish) -- yes! But only once.

OOHHH that's a dangerous thing to say !! (I am also a 'Virgin' when it comes to speeding tickts and I do about 1,000 miles a week, so it's only a matter of time)

I did get fined once, back in the early 70's, for parking at night without lights. Cost me £10 ($16) then.

I find this ironic, being most of the manufacturers are actually based in Cali...lol.

I know what you mean. Sometimes when I pull up at a light next to a car that's been "riced out", I'll rev it a few times and give the driver that "this is real American muscle" look.

I can only imagine what the Shelby sounds like when you get it up to a decent speed (around 70-80). That thing probably screams like there's no tomorrow. Definitely a car that would get me in trouble if I had one. Wife refuses to even let me test drive one..lol.

Re: How much does a 'ticket' cost?

I've had city careless driving tickets (25$), no proof of insurance (375$ brought to 50$ when I produced valid insurance), lots of parking tickets (yay philadelphia! 28-375$), and about 4 tickets for speeding (120-295$). I never did factor in the insurance hikes, but they were never really anything major since I rarely got nailed for a moving violation.

However, I always fight my tickets which reduces the level of the fine and lowers the amount of points they add to your license (unless I can win, then it gets thrown out).

Mind you, if one of your buddies has joined the cops, he may pull you over for going too slow! j/k

I have never gotten a speeding ticket. Was pulled up once for wrong lane (tried to drive straight on in a lane marked for a right turn as I realized too late I was in the wrong lane), and a couple of times was pulled up for jumping the signal (couldn't stop in time for the red light and so crawled on and parked on the side before the cops started signalling me, kinda handed myself over). For the lane cutting offence I had to shell out Rs. 100/- and do a bit of running about to recover my license. For the other two offences I paid about Rs. 50/- for NOT getting a ticket.

Over here the general procedure if you are caught violating a traffic rule is the cop will take away your license and issue a receipt in lieu of it, which mentions the offence for which the license has been impounded. You then have to pay the fine at the traffic police station which has jurisdiction over the area in which you were caught, and collect your license back. The legal procedure is somewhat different than the general and the common procedures.

The best part about driving in Mumbai is that you can never get a speeding ticket.

    That's cheating

Just curious, are you 'not allowed' to wear a seat belt, or do you choose not to because you are exempt and by doing so may hamper your job ?

It's an egress issue... having the seatbelt on runs the risk of it getting hung up on something and hampering the ability to get out of the car (emergency or not).

exactly that. Because of our duty belts too (radio, keys, OC spray, flashlight, cuffs, etc) that likes to get caught on the belt. Also, we are in and out of the car a lot so its just easier not to put it on. When we go long distances on major streets or freeways we put them on for safety.

Well the verdict is in, I got a $100 fine and lost my license for 30 days. That's bull... I'm filing a complaint.

Tell them to increase the fine and return the license.

The fine is fine. But 30 days suspended license for doing 45 in a 30mph zone, and it's my first traffic violation and no points on my license. That's bogus.

I'm appealing the ruling. Let's hope I can keep the license. If nothing else, it will extend the process so at least they don't take it away for the holidays

You were 50% above the speed limit! With all sympathy, I think a harsh punishment will help keep you away from speeding so much.

On a different note, do you all think a harsher punishment at the first instance would be a better deterrant than a gradually severe 'punishment ladder' that's typical everywhere? For e.g. a typical scenario might be that for the first offence, you pay x in fines and get y points docked, for each subsequent offence either x or y or both keep increasing and at some point when x or y reach a specific limit the punishment changes into something more severe. Assuming that you stand to lose your licence on the third repeat offence, and assuming that you stand to lose it on the first offence itself, which assumption would lead to a better compliance with the law?

In my defense, the place where the radar caught me, even though it's designated as a residential area, no houses are around half a mile back, and only two things you can see are a car shop and a run down restaurant, and plus, I was overtaking a douche that was going 20mph.

In my opinion, punishment "ladder" is better. A small punishment in the beginning will make the driver extra cautious so that he wouldn't repeat it later.

Re: How much does a 'ticket' cost?

i would go for a really harsh punishment first, then an equal, or harsher punishment for each additional time. If people are afraid of the punishment, then they wont do it, and there wont be a next time. I think, if any, the DUI consequences should be as extreme as possible. Especially now that i have been driving a lot later at night, I would rather not have to worry about going into an intersection and having a drunk drive t-bone me.

That happened to my friends mom. She broke several vertebrae, was in the hospital for a few months, and in critical condition. She was close to breaking her spinal cord, killing her. She tried to sue the guy for everything he owned, unfortunately, he owned nothing. He lived with his mom, and she was even in debt.

That would be a good approach for a progressive society, where you see the society as a whole trying to learn from its mistakes, drivers genuinely trying to improve themselves, where a ladder provides them a chance to correct past wrongs.

If I were to lose my license for a month if I jumped a signal for the first time, I would try hard as hell to make sure I never jumped any. And if I avoided that first offence, there's no way in hell I would commit it a second time, right?

C'mon, you were 50% above the limit! No matter the circumstances, you shouldn't have been going that fast. Maybe 10% over the limit is probably safe and the cops might not have bothered you then. But you are creating too much of a dilemma for them by going so much above.
