What's the fastest you've ever driven?

From the thread about "how much do tickets cost" people were talking about speeding tickets and how fast they were driving so I thought I'd start this thread. You can give us your story along with your vote in the poll if you like. Where were you? What car were you driving? Highway, freeway, street, off road, track? etc. etc.

I used to a have 1987 Mitsubishi Turbo Mirage that was fairly fast. In the desert on an undivided highway not too far from Palmdale in the early 90's I took it up to I think 110 to 115 Mph.

My brother when he was in high school had a Dodge Challenger with a 383 cubic inch V8 and was hopped up somewhat. I don't know what it could do in the quarter mile or what the 0 to 60 mph time for it was but from a stop I've never felt such acceleration and a feeling of getting pushed back into my seat as in that car. I never got to drive it myself though. He's 4 years older than I and he got rid of it because of the lousy gas mileage so by the time I was 16 and driving he had sold it.

Re: What's the fastest you've ever driven?

High school also: 112 MPH in my '69 Mustang, 302 stock. Packed gravel side-road out of prying eyes' view. My best friend was riding shotgun, it was a blast. Tore up my power steering hose due to the flying bits of gravel but that sure didn't wipe the smiles off our faces. Looking back, how dumb were we!

Edited: The fastest I've ever gone in my life was well over 500mph. It wasn't driving & wasn't a car. It was an F-16 Fighting Falcon. When I was stationed (Air Force) in Italy during mid-1990s. My boss the big cheese, as a fairwell present just before I was to head back to the States, authorized an incentive flight in the F16 for me. The pilot I got for that flight was a hot dog & did his best to make me toss my cookies. Anyway, during the flight I was handed over the controls for about 15 minutes. I peformed my own g-turns, aileron rolls, and 1/2 of a loop-de-loop (wouldn't let me keep the controls when I rolled it back towards land). My g-turn was a pitiful 6 but I did experience 10 g's thanx to that hot dog pilot. Though I was offered to experience +mach speeds, I turned it down. Doing so would have resulted in the flight time cut dramatically -- I wanted to stay up in the air for as long as I could that day.

Re: What's the fastest you've ever driven?

The fastest i ever went was 135mph in my vw jetta vr6. I have a cruise control problem and after it has been set for about 5 minutes it just takes off and accelerates faster than i can make it accelerate by just pushing the gas to the floor. So one time i decided to see where it wanted to go so I did and I chickened out at 135mph but it was still accelerating.

Re: What's the fastest you've ever driven?

It does not count for the poll but after several hours of no lifts hitch hiking in Scotland a chap picked me up in some ridiculous limited edition beamer (bmw). At one point this porsche ripped past at 100+, the driver just looked at me and smiled and before I knew it we were at 140 something making this porsche eat dust, being the guest I was very polite.

I currently drive a slightly pimped ex post office morris minor van, which would only make the poll if driven off a cliff.

There is one question remaining: Did you come with or without a caravan attached to your car?

I did my run one night at INEL. I was in the Navy at the S1W prototype and we decided to go out for drinks one night. 1 Vette, 2 RX7's and 1 280Z. The speed kept going up as se continued to pass each other on the way to the bar.

Re: What's the fastest you've ever driven?

Personally I chickened out at about 170 kph (my dad's car, so yeah, don't want to get caught doing that in my dad's car hehe), but a taxi driver (in Mallorca, on holiday) thought the car's on the freeway weren't fast enough and decided to drive past them at over 220 kph. That was a bit scary, especially since I'm not sure he was sober

My friend has a video of himself doing > 270 kph on his bike though. Sorry but if you do > 270 kph on a public road you're *** insane

Re: What's the fastest you've ever driven?

The digital speedometer on that bike got up to 299 kph, perhaps faster. That's 185.8 mph. I noticed he did exercise a certain degree of caution. He would sometimes slow to under 200 kph(124 mph). I'm glad to see he's being so cautious.

You can't figure out what speed he averaged because they don't give you the elapsed time. It says 10:18 AM at the start but they don't give the time of arrival. I wonder what the chances are that that guy will die from natural causes versus the chances he'll die from an accident.

That was just part 1. Here's the second http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0flRAlwrlc
The guy is a total maniac. Calls himself Ghost Rider. Has about 5 movies doing stuff like that and messing with the cops.

EDIT: Just checked the end, he averaged just over 170 mph. Distance 42.6 miles in just under 15 minutes, with a lot of traffic.

    125mph (around 200kph) in my wife's Dodge Charger SRT8.

It can go faster, but I didn't want to test it. Not worth the risk.

Prettymuch since I started driving there has been a stuntdriving law in Ontario. The law basically says that if you're caught doing 50 or more over the speedlimit and get caught, you will lose your license immediately, have your car towed and face a fine of up to $5,000.

Long story short, the fastest I've gone was 145km/h

I once clocked 140kmph on the expressway. It was newly built, the first of its kind. So much so that the speed limit of 80kmph was for many days mistaken to be the lower limit. I was driving a Fiat Uno diesel. I have clocked 130kmph in two other cars, but now I seldom go past 110kmph.

Either I don't get the joke, or the creator of the joke doesn't get special relativity. Assuming one can travel at the speed of light, if one would then turn on a light, he would see that light travel at the speed of light. That's the basis of special relativity: no matter how fast you are moving, light always moves at the same speed for all observers. Of course, if you were actually moving at the speed of light that would horribly break physics, so luckily that's impossible.
