How much does "Thank you" cost ?

I've been pottering around this Forum for some time, trying to help people, (mainly 'newbies'). It's really sad that only very occasionally do I see a 'thank you' or, come to that, a 'Resolved' thread.

Am I getting old and just bad tempered or what ?

Usually what I noticed is that the people who replies to thank you or add reputation with a comment and mark threads as resolved are the same. They usually do both or none at all.

I think there's an attitude problem. More and more people just come expecting others to solve their problem for them, without putting any effort on their part or actually trying to learn something.
Even worse, on top of all that they don't give any explanation of their problem or what they are trying to do and they still expect you to magically understand and read their mind and give them a working solution, most preferably code that they can just paste into their project and have it work.

I'm not looking for a thank you specifically, but seeing effort and genuine wish to learn is enough for my satisfaction.

Kind of a "no coder left behind" attitude. One can substitute child/coder without any change in the sarcasm

Well said baja. I totally agree with that. I've only been here for 3 years and started answering more actively in the last year and a half but I still noticed this lack of effort you're mentioning.

Yes! You are turning into what is technically known as a Curmudgeon, but is also known as Old Fart, Crazy Old Coot, and so on. You might as well start looking for other traits, such as:

    1) Do you shake your cane at kids if they step on your lawn?

    2) Do you shave your ears?

    3) Have you ever started a statement with, "Back in my day..."

    4) Have you ever misplaced your teeth?

Re: How much does "Thank you" cost ?

I guess I try to match the effort of my replies to the presumed effort of the poster's question. I don't feel like I need to be thanked if we're "equally invested." It would be nice if more people would mark "resolved" just so we know you're good though.

Re: How much does "Thank you" cost ?

    Its all about perception IMO.

One can say one needs to hear Thanks or Thank You but if you think about why you are trying to post the answer it may help with the "old fart" syndrome lol.

We usually like to answer quesitons because we like to help and volunteer but also I personally like the challenge of solving problems that I dont get to come accross in my daily work and projects. This broader exposure gives us back more experience and thus knowledge so we kinda dont need to hear Thanks as we are already getting something back for our efforts but it is nice to hear once in a while etc.

    I agree,

the only thing I'd really like is that the thread be marked as "Resolved" when the problem has been solved. Its almost as a thanks anyway :P

True and if they state what actually was the fix helps others as well when they come across it in a search.

You can only add reps for members from your country! In your case, there are only about 5000 possible members!

That's because you have the Rep Exchange module loaded. At 5k points, you get it automatically installed. I believe at the current exchange rate, 1USR (US Rep) is equal to about .85 BR (British Rep)... I haven't looked to see what the exchange rate to AR (Australian Rep) is.

More than the kind of attitude baja mentioned, I guess there are some who like to explicitly thank others who help them, and there are some who do not explicitly thank others. I fall in the latter category. However it doesn't mean I disrespect any who help me out. It's just that I don't have the habit of posting 'Thank You's. Neither do I expect any in return to whatever I can help with.

Re: How much does "Thank you" cost ?

    Screw thanks... I want paying!

I'm really not that surprised at the number of folks who don't thank/rep/mark as resolved etc. This is the internet. It's one of those places, like being in the car, where people feel anonymous enough not to bother with manners. Actually, I think VBF fairs a bit better on this front than most of the rest of the internet. Mind you I mostly hang out in the DB section (actually that's a lie, I mostly hang out in CC ) and I've always had the impression that the manners there are a bit better than in the main VB.Net forum because it's a smaller set of people.

If you really want recognition for the help you offer then I think you need to find a different place where you can give it in person. Off the top of my head I can't think of where you could help people without qualification in the way that you can on the net but face-to-face is the only forum wheer you'll get properly thanked for your efforts.

You can tkae part inthat big test "Am I really that old?", which is coming up near 24th Dec.
Just check wether the presents you get from your kids are more expensive/bigger/etc.. then the one you give to them. If yes, your kids think you are that OLD. In this case you are really OLD!

£0.75 actually. Which is incidentally the shipping cost of 200 high intensity Blue LEDs from Ebay to my house. So screw you, I'd rather have the pretty lights than your stupid advice.

I usually post a thank you after a quick reply. I may not post if there is no reply for a long time, probably because I found the solution first.

I like to thank someone who took the pains to post several lines of code..
