Mac/Windows/Linux
Mac windows or Linux? Why one over the other?
If you picked Linux then out of Mac and Windows, which one?
Personally I like windows and Linux better than mac since I can't stand how limited the GUI is when it comes to development - ya it has terminal which supports quite a bit, however it wasn't really intended for programming..
Also I can't stand these naive arguments about how mac is better. "mac is better than a windows because it has a backlit keyboard"...lol

Re: Mac/Windows/Linux
It all depends on what you want to do with it and what you need it for.
If you are just a regular user, surfing, music, movies, light office and image manipulation, either one will suit you fine.
If you do development for either, then you need that one. You won't get much by trying to make applications for Windows, in Linux.
I've used (and am still using) all three, and I can get along with any of them.

Re: Mac/Windows/Linux
I grew up with DOS and Windows 3.11 which lead to Win95, 98SE, XP, & now 7. I've also used Ubuntu a few times and it's my 2nd choice , I've also used Mac 3, 5, 6, 8, 9 & some of 10 and so far haven't cared for any of those versions.
My cousins grew up using Mac & it's what they still use today, I also have a friend who's dad was a big Unix fan and they now use Linux. I believe that the most likely OS a person uses is what they grew up with (I'm talking about those who're 30 or less in which they grew up with a rudimentary OS) and since they become sooo familiar with it, that's usually the track they stay on.
Though these smart phones are a beast all of their own in which case it doesnt matter if it's an iPhone or a Droid or whatever, all those smart phones look, feel and work the same. There's very few apps for one smart phone that isn't available for another.

Re: Mac/Windows/Linux
I've used windows since 3.1 too and am currently using 7 Ultimate, As I mostly use Visual Studio 2008 ans 2010 to code, its a natural choice. I'm also a gamer so as most games are created to run on Windows...
I've got no problems at all with Linux and am thinking about installing it on my netbook as it only has 1g Ram and Windows 7 starter is a little bit slow.

Untrue. Google is spanking mac's arse when it comes to smart phone development. The android API is freaking sweet! The Iphone, not so much. Objective C blows. Download eclipse and the andriod SDK. Play around with the emulator a bit. You'll dig it fo sure. Not sure about the windows 7 mobile SDK yet. I haven't played around with it yet. I hear good things tho.

Err? I can't comment on what Android development is like as I've never done any, but using XCode (4) is just too easy to develop apps (reminds me very much of Visual Studio). Why do you say Android's SDK is much better?
I'm a Mac, my folks were the first to get them, having used theirs I wanted one, much preferred the OS (Leopard) over Windows (XP at the time), still do despite liking 7. Up until then, I wasn't really aware of Apple, I just know I loved my 1st gen 2GB iPod Nano.

Give it a try and see for yourself. If you think Iphone dev is easy, you could knock out some killer apps on the android platform in your sleep. The framework is very developer friendly. Google did a stand up job on this. And they documented it well.
I'm running it using eclipse on ubuntu. The only issue I've had so far was getting Subclipse working properly. Once I got past that, It's been awesome.

I also might like to add (if only this) that while XCode is Mac-exclusive software, the Android SDK works with Eclipse, and Eclipse is multi-platform.
I'm not saying any SDK is better, all I'm saying is that XCode is more accessible to developers. No different to Microsoft releasing Windows Phone 7 SDK exclusively to Windows only.

Do you mean less accessible? If so, I know what you mean.

Yes, yes, that's what I mean. Have no clue why I wrote that XCode is more accessible... :/

I use Windows purely because of games. Yes, I can run emulators / VM's in other OS'es, though I doubt my hardware is powerful enough to play the games properly.

Re: Mac/Windows/Linux
I prefer Windows over linux because I grew up with DOS and Windows, also I have worked with Microsoft development tools, so it was a natural choice. I have been playing around with Linux for the past few months, but compared to Windows it still has a lot to cover up in terms of user interface, or rather user friendliness. That's my personal opinion, and someone who hasn't worked with Windows may find it otherwise.
About Mac, I haven't used it at all, but we have some iPhone development going on in our office, so I have been able to get some impression of the Mac OS from the developers. They say that it's a pretty solid OS. I guess one of the reasons is what goes and what does not into the box is very tightly controlled by Apple, so they can assure a setup that's more robust than the remaining two.
And of course, I have been hard pressed to find any good games for Linux, so Windows scores over Linux in that department too!
