Who is this Millet? (the one that painted this)

I need to know who is the Painter, There is a famous painter named J.F.Millet who used to sign "J.F.Millet" on the right side, but this painting has a "G.Millet" or maybe "J.Millet" signature on its left side. This is the Painting and the signature..

PD: Or.. perhaps Anyone knows about a forum (maybe more "artist" related ) where this question could be answered?

but i read the biography of MILLET, Francisque(1642-1679) he is the father
he got a son j.f millet and he got a grandson Joseph Millet (c. 1688-1777)
maybe its J.Millet My problem now is I cant find any work of him to compare the signature and style.

Not having much luck with Joseph Millet keep finding dozens of things on Francisque Millet and other people though.

His oeuvre remains ill-defined, in part because he seems never to have signed his paintings and in part because after his death (by poisoning) both his son Jean Millet (c. 1666-1723) and later his grandson Joseph Millet (c. 1688-1777) took the name Francisque and continued to paint landscapes in his style. The firmest point of reference for attributions to Millet is a series of 28 engravings after his works made by one Theodore, possibly a pupil. They are all landscapes, some with religious, mythological or heroic genre subjects,

The sign pic had been removed from the site where it was posted, i uploaded it again here, it's in the first post.
Btw, after making this thread in february, i contacted this place: http://www.villapalagonia.com.ar/ and sent these pics to them to have their opinion, they just told me this is not J.F.Millet (we already know that), they also told me they sold this very similar painting just as a "decorative" painting (low value), this last painting could have been done by the same painter, the style seems to be the same.

I'm still not sure who is the painter, i just know this painting was bought around 50 years ago (maybe more) in Auction here in Argentina, this painting has been changing owners trought generations in my family.

Hi domy, judging from the Impressionist style it can't be by a painter from the 17th century. The painter J.F.Millet (The Gleaners etc.) lived around 1815-1870. Millet is a common surname, but if he also happened to have a son called J. it might be possible.

The painting seems to be full of quotations from the famous series of Paris street scenes which Camille Pissarro painted in 1897 (see example below or Wikipedia for more examples). Note the similarity of the perspective, the lampposts, the horse and buggy, the sketchy figures. But the costumes (in as far as you can make them out - not a top hat in sight) and the bright shop lighting look more recent. So I would guess that the painting is from 1910 or later.

And the melting frame (#15) reminds me of Salvador Dali. And the brown sticky tape along the top and left of the painting reminds me of something I threw in the garbage can last week. And the blurry painting reminds me of something I trod in on the way back. BB

looking at the painting, specifically the street lights.. are those supposed to be electric street lights? They seem to be rather tall to be something flame/gas lit (I could of course be wrong on that).

If that is the case and they are electric lights that are painted there, then I would imagine the painting can't be all that old. Probably anywhere from mid 1800s to early 1900s

does look similar. I guess it is just the massive height in the painting that makes them look like they would be electric. Even if they are gas, that would still put the period around mid to later 1800s I would think.

That's a good idea, but in my case i prefer not to pay for it, now I think this is not a valuable painting (the one in first post), i can't even find who this J.Millet or G.Millet really was. Also after searching for info about this and by looking other paintings i think this one must be from 1900+, not as old as i thought it was.

You could send boops boops on the hunt visiting art galleries, etc in France tracking down any trace of who this Millet was.

No thank you. I think the gallery jcis contacted was right -- it's a nice decorative painting and that's all there is to be said about it. Searching for the "Millett" who painted it would be a wild goose chase. Looking at it again, I would say the painting (#1) was made in the mid 1960s or later by an amateur artist and a bit of a con man. Millett wasn't his real name. I can back these assertions with arguments but I don't have time now.
