i just finished the avatar: the last airbender series

I don't care what you thought of the movie. Watch the series. If you have netflix, it's on there. It received a kid's choice award, and it also has themes adults relate to. My wife watched the entire series with me. It's THAT good.

    I have spoken.

Is it available for streaming on Netflix? I could check, but I don't have access whilst at work.

yes it's streaming. Give it two episodes. By then they have introduced most of the main characters and their personalities.

I'm confused. Are you saying the Avatar film has something to do with this new Last Airbender film?

no i am not. I am saying "the last airbender" film has something to do with "Avatar: The last airbender" the 60 episode cartoon series. For reasons that should be apparent they left "avatar" out of the name to prevent confusion and actually rolled back the theatrical release date an entire year as it was due to come out the same time as avatar.

How is it possible to take any film, book or even cartoon seriously when characters say phrases like "When I grow up, I want to be a bender"?
    I use VB 6, VB.Net 2003 and Office 2010

my signature quote is from it. No one in the anime ever said yours. If that was a line from the movie... ugh.

Does that gag work in the US? I don't know if "Bender" has the same connotations over there.

I watched the film last night and that line isn't in it but "He's a bender" is. Oh how we chuckled...

The word "bender" is usually used to describe some period of time when you're trying to escape reality by consuming alcohol and drugs.

    He's on a bender.

I suppose in the UK, it means "queer". Is that right?

It's an American cartoon, made by two white male Americans.

    Looks like an Anime, but
    1) Has high production value, so it's entirely fluid movement, not jerky or still frames with just the mouth moving like most Anime shows do to try to save money.
    2) They use at least one martial artist and four different martial art styles (one for each of the four nations and bending styles) to map out the action scenes. So an fire bender (person who can shoot flames from their hands) uses Shaolin kungfu (very aggressive looking style), while the water bender uses Tai-Chi (Very fluid looking style).
    3) Lots of comedy, drama and good chemistry between the characters. It's a kid's show of course so don't expect anything gory.
    4) A lot of really really original story ideas and well written personalities.

Yes. Which makes the phrase "He's on a bender" even funnier.

Good show. There's a new one coming out. The grandson of Ang teaches a water bending avatar.... I'm guessing Katara and Aang had babies.

    The movie was pretty bad.

I refused to even consider watching it. I'm not going to let it tarnish the series for me.

Re: i just finished the avatar: the last airbender series

It wasn't bad but it wasn't particularly good either. If you went along with no expectations except to see a kids fantasy adventure film with some rather natty effects you'd quite enjoy it. I never saw the series but from the way I hear people talk I would suggest fans avoid the film, I really doubt it will live up to your expectations.

that chart annoys me. I had no idea most of the movies i actually hated, let alone disliked, were directed by him. Although truthfully i would give "the village" a higher rating than signs.

    Just pointing out:

Fire - Northern Shaolin (a lot of kicks and fancy moves)
    Water - Tai Chi
    Air - PaQua/Bagua
Earth - Southern Shaolin (more punches and grounded stances)

I found the chart funny... mostly because it's true... but I agree with your comment about The Village, I thought it was better than Signs.

M Night, another director that thinks he can write, along with George Lucas, though at least Lucas can write great set pieces, just not the dialogue.

Both also seem to be terrible actor directors.

The only directors I know that are great writers and actor directors are Chris Nolan and Tarantino.

Re: i just finished the avatar: the last airbender series

follow up: The last airbender is now out on dvd. It wasn't near as horrible as i heard. Everyone who reviewed it forgot to mention that it's book one of the series only. Having seen the series and skimmed through the movie it seems to be a decent adaptation. Only oddities were "Only the masters can create fire with their chi" which means everyone else needed a fire source handy, and Aang had issues learning water bending to start with. Plus while the general plot was the same, some parts were changed, i suspect for dramatic effect although a rampaging water monster would have been more dramatic in my opinion than a wall of water. Yet it did illustrate the level he came to master the field he had trouble with.

For that matter, everyone who said "he had trouble learning water bending" ... since we haven't seen his difficulty in learning fire or earth yet, water may in fact have been the easy one.
