My boss has named our new server...
The new backup tape management server (backup server) has been named "BS1"

Re: My boss has named our new server...
Would that be a replacement of BS and a precursor to BS2?
Actually, my very favorite university in all world is Boise State University.

Most of the time, that's what comes out of the boss anyway. Seems appropriate to me.
Here's to us!

Darned few, and they're all dead!

Re: My boss has named our new server...
At a place I worked they had at some point bought 7 database servers at the same time, so they got named after the 7 dwarfs.
Unfortunately the most powerful (and thus long-lived) one was called Grumpy, and often lived up to its name (regularly crashing etc).

I once had a contracting gig at a company that named their servers after the characters in Winnie The Pooh

You should switch computers with your mentor then, or move to Ontonagon.

Two things:
There are 83 counties in Michigan...what do you name the 84th computer?
I'd like my computer to be named "Alger" please.

Re: My boss has named our new server...
I worked with them recently. Actually most of the computers are being renamed to make life for software developers and users a nightmare. They are basing them on inventory tags and billing info, so you see names like X123456084622BUS.
I'm sure there are still a few rogue agencies out there choosing their own names, but it won't last.
I'd rather be in Ontonagon myself actually. The economic collapse made real estate cheap too. But... it has turned most of the villages into ghost towns as people leave seeking work elsewhere.

I'll take Grand Marais, in Alger County, right on the shores of Lake Superior...in fact, that is where I'm planning on moving to when I retire. My big night on the town will be going to Munising.

Two things:
1. There's only 55 people, so the 84th computer will be a long time before it's a problem.
2. Move to Lansing and get a job with: Dept. of Management & Budget, Center for Shared Solutions, Center of Geographic Information, though I think Alger county is already taken....

Re: My boss has named our new server...
At one place I used to work they named each server after a star in the universe and clusters (as you may guess) after constellations or galaxies. It worked for them...
Where I work now we have conference rooms named after city's land marks which geographical locations are relevant to our floor plan.
It's actually very cool as floor is quite large and confusing for some people so if you know town then "navigation" is piece of cake.

Well if we all do that maybe Munising will make a comeback. Dogpatch has been looking a bit down at the heels of late.

Ain't it the truth...although I love this on their home page.
"Vacation in Munising Michigan
There is so much to do!"
Whoever wrote that probably hasn't been to Munising lately

Re: My boss has named our new server...
We had servers named as "Rachel, Monica, Phoebe" in our server room.
Currently we are sticking to the characters from the Age of Mythology.
Another placed I worked at had servers named after characters from Disney.

We have:
Ashenvale (<-- mine)
Kalimdor
Zangarmarsh (<-- mine)
Azeroth
Northrend
Orgrimmar
I suppose we could've gone with county names but England is tiny, and the World of Warcraft is... big.

Re: My boss has named our new server...
If I had a bunch of new servers, I'd name them after Oblivion place names...
Anvil, Bravil, Bruma, Chorrol, Cheydinhal, Leyawiin, Skingrad and Kvatch for the big important servers and then use names of Forts for the others.
I don't live here any more.

I think I'll use that suggestion on the next computer we setup for an employee. But which fort shall I use?

i used to think this sort of thing was unnecessary but as we currently in our home have four laptops and seven systems that function, i might have to start doing this. I don't think i'll be naming it any cities that burn down though.

Re: My boss has named our new server...
lol I'm surprised a lot of these places are allowed to name servers with such daft names - after all any users that have mapped drives to them etc will see the name and it looks a little... well, unprofessional. I guess it depends what kind of company you work for though. At all of the places I have worked they have just had sensible names like UKAPP1, UKWEB1, UKDC1 etc etc, though I remember at school the servers used to be named after planets... which is pretty boring compared to some of the themes in this thread
