    Microsoft 7; Apple 2: That's Per Second

I just ran into the headline, Microsoft Sells Seven Win 7 Copies Per Second. The headline says it all; I wish I had though of it! What is even funnier is that the comment seems to be a reply to the comment that Apple is selling 2 iPads per second. Whether it is a reply or not it is fun to make the comparison even if it is like comparing apples to oranges, err.....

Re: Microsoft 7; Apple 2: That's Per Second

It would be interesting to see what numbers MS used to come up with that. If you include retail sales where Win7 is pre-loaded, and enterprise installs that are upgrading, then I buy it. (no pun intended) Then again, a sale is a sale. The other question is then, if OEM loads are included, are those actual sales (ie, they have actually left Best Buy) or are they simply the allocations to that OEM?

And whether it's over the same time period. Would hardly seem an equal comparison if MS went back all the way to November, while Apple has only been selling the iPhone4 for, what a week or so?

Who cares, it's a comparison of lousy datapoints either way.

Now these points of data make a beautiful line.
    And we're out of beta.

I find this line a bit concerning:

Microsoft plans to release the first service pack for Windows 7 next month. Windows 7 SP1, however, will mostly be a compilation of previously released updates and security patches.
What!!! They still can't figure out how to fix the bugs they've had in previous versions of Windows? That would be like trying to clean up a giant oil spill while it is still gushing out from the earth.

It's a rollup patch... they do that everyonce in a while. That way if someone rebuilds their Win7 machine, rather that having to install 100 patches/bug fixes, you install the SP1 and be done with it... it's not to fix previous WINDOWS versions.... but releasing a single installable SP that covers everything that has been patched up to this point.

Apparently so, since it happens so often.

I would like to make a correction...

It is entirely possible to compare Apples and Oranges
