I'm not sure you would understand being a kid but here goes anyway..

For the past 18 years my #1 job has been to make sure that the kids are safe, happy and where they need to be when they need to be there. To do this I've had to ask each family member at dinner what they have planned for the week and when. I then figure out how to get everyone where they need to be, make sure they have everything they need and then implement the plan.

For the past year I have been met with a lot of resistance...the kids aren't home for dinner or they forget to tell me something and then they get all miffed because things don't go their way. My oldest acts like I'm being nosy and even said that I was too controlling. I'm doing the same thing I've done, that has kept them busy, safe, and happy for the past 18 years but all of a sudden it's being controlling instead of trying to help. I don't understand this.

If I just stop trying to figure out a schedule then I end up having to either make one kid stay home or find another ride because I can't be in two places at once or can't drive a car if someone has taken it to the school for band practice while the other car is with my husband at college!

Then the person who gets left out feels that I'm playing favorites because they are the one who didn't get to do what they had planned to do.

Why can't I just get the cooperation I used to get so that they can all be happy. Why is it being nosey all of a sudden when it wasn't nosey to ask the same questions last year?????

ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

He said I was controlling and nosey....and didn't tell me that he needed $45 dollars for grad night and that he needed to be at rehearsal at 1:00 this afternoon so I told Travis he could take the car since he and Erin are getting out of school at 12:30 today....so I had to run around like a chicken with my head cut off this morning because he wouldn't let me be "controlling and nosey" last night!

Sorry I'm late, I had to operate on some guy's brain, luckily I had managed to get a few pints of ale down my neck before the op, to steady my hands of course.

Anyway, sounds like you should just leave the kids who won't tell you their plans, to make their own arrangements and not bale them out. It sounds like it's just your oldest son, so let him work his own plans out and if the car or cash isn't available, then tough, he should have given you some warning.

Besides, I remember being a right grumpy bugger when I was a teenager too.

Do what my dad did, send them away to the University. Then sell the house and move inter state leaving no forwarding address. Dad, if your out there, l really need the car this weekend.

Actually leave them to their own devices, don't try and fix up their problems...give it about a week...and it's sorted.

Well, personally, I agree with everyone. They are getting to the age where they think that they can do everything for themselves (I know I was there not that long ago) But quite often they are just trying. I never appreciated it when my parents tried to do stuff for me. I wanted to figure it out for myself.

Just think of it as your son is becoming a man and is attempting some sort of independance. I a couple of years they will look back and realise what a damn good mother you were.

Just thought I'd come and show my face. Teenagers simply don't like to be told what to do, they like their secrecy.

Simply tell him you're prepared to give him the space he needs, but in doing so you'll be unable to meet all his needs - if he wants independence, he can have it, but he has to be mature about it (making his own bed, finding his own transport etc). As long as you make sure he knows you love him and you're only trying to help, I'm sure he'll understand (eventually).

You sound like a great mum, he'll grow up to appreciate you. He's just learning to appreciate himself

and his own independence.

I was a real pain at that age. I think I've mellowed somewhat now, but I still demand my own privacy. I appreciate my mum now...

Thank everyone! Ian and I (he's 18 1/2) had a nice talk last night and I think things are going to be just fine.

He graduates today at 4:00. He put on his cap and gown last night and I had a very hard time not crying. But I maintained. He is very excited about the graduation ceremony....he is playing "Free Bird" by Lynard Skynard on the piano and his best buddy is playing the guitar....his current gf is going to sing(???) After that all the graduates are going to GradNight at Disneyland. They close the park for anyone who isn't a grad and they party until 6:00am tomorrow!

Ian even told me that he loved me last night! I haven't heard that out of him for at least six months!!!!!!!!!

Today, I'm a happy Mom!

Every year since the beginning of time (yes, even when I graduated) Disneyland has an all night party for graduates.

I remember mine as if it was yesterday. It was great! Nothing but 12th graders as far as the eye could see (with the exception of the chaperones, who are sitting in the bus getting quietly drunk).....huge party with great bands and great rides! It lasts from 8pm to 6am! A night I will NEVER forget!
