New Bill Grants Fed Power to Shut Down the Web

    http://www.switched.com/2010/06/18/n...-down-the-web/

Frankly. I think that is pretty pathetic, yet another example of people sticking their noses where it doesn't belong. Since the internet belongs to everyone then what right have they got to claim they can just turn parts of it off?

Since that would not really be shutting down the internet, merely the parts that were under US control, I don't know how much effect it would have but since most large companies use multiple server banks scattered all over the world most countries would still keep most of their internet access - though the data rates would probably be terrible.

A significant number of the switching servers that make up the backbone of the internet are based in the US.

The master servers for each countries code, e.g. .com, .co.uk are stored in their respective countries - the central links are scattered all over. Turning off the internet in one place will affect the internet - not not bring it down.

And if it were possible for one country to bring it down like that - then such laws should not even be considered and should be illegal.

Tech companies have more than enough money/lobbyists to make sure this dies a slow death.

Cloud computing would be DOA if the FEDs had the power to just shut down parts of the internet like that, and that's something companies like Google, Apple, and Microsoft cannot afford to let happen.

That's a good point - I don't see any of the big internet giants taking that laying down.

What happened to Nemaroller? Were they watching him, and snatched him off just as he was finishing that sentence? Has he been taken away for testing?

    George Orwell was a prophet!

I guess companies will start looking for hosting sites in other countries. Move your servers to maybe Iceland?

    "Master servers" huh?

Um... I don't think so. The DNS network is highly distributed, and I really doubt every country has "it's own" backbone server in the network.

It just doesn't work that way.
