Referendum Rigging

Many people seem to believe that if there was a referendum on Britian joining the european single currency (held by a future labour government), it would be rigged in terms of both timing and the exact phrasing of the question.

I am interested to know if this view is shared by other British members of this forum.

There's no doubt that the timing would be carefully calculated, and they will probably phrase it badly. It should just be "Should we join the Euro? Yes or No".

I can undestand a more complex question being phrased ambigously but surely this is a simple question? Either we join or we don't Either we're in or we're out. There's no grey area.

As for the timing, why is "waiting until it is in Britain's economic interests" wrong? If we were to join at a time when Britain's economy is out of sync (like now) with european economies, the process would be a lot more painful.

The majority of people have no idea what the implications would be so there is little point in asking them in a referendum because they will just vote however the media tells them to.


The government shouldn't decide for us because they are a clueless bunch of ******s anyway.

I don't know what the inplications of scrapping the pound would be; I'm a computer programmer, not a bean counter and I expect the same applies to most other professionals.

Why do Labour want to be re-elected when they don't want to govern the country anyway?
They've already got shot of Scotland, partly rid themselves of Wales and London and now want to dispose of the rest of the country!

Perhaps a 'royal commission' on the subject is the answer? Everyone stays out of it and we do whatever they decide is best for britain?

Well, back in early 1970s it was a referendum that got us into this dawm mess in the first place and it was a Tory goverment.

I tend to say *&%# it and join up, too much hassle to leave the EU now
