Holy Man and his 70 years without food or water

    Or the Inedian Indian.

So this guy claims that he hasn't had food or water in 70 years. The media, of course, is lapping it up, pun unintended, and what surprised me the most was the lack of any sort of data around it. As of today, the claim is that he has proven his abilities after the 15 day observation period.

Most of his breatharian brethren in the past have either died or have lost weight at the end of the trial, indicating that the body is nom noming itself to survive.

I was a bit surprised when it was reported, since there was no data provided, and also when I saw the lead doctor's name: Sudhir Shah. Surely, not the very same Sudhir Shah who studied another breatharian who did end up losing significant amounts of weight at the end of the trial? Lo, the very same. Also turns out that HRM does actually drink water, tea and coffee.

More: Prahlad Jani, the holy man in the limelight now, had been investigated before and he did lose weight that time. I'm also wondering how his body grew in size from child to adult without any food.

The whole thing sounds like a hoax to me, perpetrated by some doctor out to make a name for himself...

    Yeah, ad hominem much?

Put him in a controlled area monitored by observers and see how quickly he realizes he has to eat and drink.

BTW, NASA has never heard of HR Manek or this phenomenon.

Re: Holy Man and his 70 years without food or water

mendhak you skeptic you. Now I didn't even look at your link nor do I care to investigate whether this guy's claim is genuine or not. What I do know is that it can be done. Maybe it's only 1 in a million or less that can do it but I'm certain it can be done. Maybe I can't convince anyone else and that's ok. Everything is interconnected. If you don't have faith that you can conquer some limitation of your own then you're going to tend to think that no one else can conquer limitations of whatever sort.

I bet mendhak that you haven't broken your habit of smoking. Now you don't have to answer that and I'm not really curious as to whether you have or not but if you had broken that habit then you might start to believe that you and others can conquer limitations of whatever sort. As I said before everything is interconnected. How you view yourself influences how you view others. What you feel is possible or impossible for yourself influences what you feel is possible or impossible for others.

There are many people that feel they can't live without smoking but there are millions that live happily without smoking. Food is just a different kind of addiction that almost everyone on planet earth falls under but there are souls that can live happily and healthily without it. I could go into a long effort to try to present all kinds of arguments and quote this and that but I don't really feel like it and perhaps no one would appreciate it anyway but I would like others not to feel so limited and restricted by these forces that try to keep us ever bound to matter and the senses and all kinds of external attachments.

Don't give up in trying to conquer your personal limitations. I still have plenty of my own that I have to contend with but I have enough faith to know that what Christ said is true. "Nothing is impossible to him who believes." He taught that faith can move mountains. There are souls that are so far above us in what they can achieve and the state of consciousness that they have attained that if I spoke about it people would just start calling me a "wacko" or a "psycho". (Shaggy and Max that's ok that you call me that. I don't hold it against you.) Maybe this guy truly is able to do what he said he did and maybe he's just a con artist but there are souls that can live without food and even those that can live without air. Those souls aren't concerned about fame or money or the praise of others so they could care less about proving it to others or trying to convince others that they can do whatever but they might demonstrate some miracle of some kind to others for the sake of trying to expand people's notion of what is possible.

Most of the time the souls that can perform genuine miracles(it is rare to find such a soul on this planet) keep their powers hidden and only demonstrate them if they feel directed by God to do so. They've conquered their egos so they aren't motivated by any personal dersires of any sort.

Do all things equate to drugs?

By the way, no known creature lives without nutrients coming in from some source, yet you are suggesting that man can live without taking in any nutrients from any source. Is man special in this regard, or is it just that every other organism has decided not to follow that path? If it is the former, how do you account for the fact that non-human cells may outnumber human cells in the average person? This would include bacteria in our guts that help us digest certain nutrients, and any number of other symbiotic, parasitic, or mutualistic organisms. Do you expect that when the human decides to live without taking in any food, then all the other organisms associated with that human tacitly agree to the compact? Do they all die as a result? Can the human survive if all the other organisms residing in the host die off? Evidence suggests that the answer to the last one is no, though the study can't be conducted.

@EntityX, by that theory, breathing and drinking water must also be some kind of addiction.

Maybe NASA could send him to moon or some other new planet they discover and observe if he can survive in the alien climate. Of course you don't get chicken tandoori on the Moon, so someone like HR Manek would be the most likely candidate for such a test.

And just imagine: If NASA send this chap on the next Moon (or Mars) mission, how much would they save on the food that they would otherwise have to pack. Maybe they can use this saved money to find out and fix their foaming issues, just in case HR Manek does develop a taste for the chicken tandoor and wants to come back.

Food and cigarette smoke are not the same, we can live without smoking but not without food.

Re: Holy Man and his 70 years without food or water

@EX, but that's just a play on words - calling food a limitation and then saying that limitations can be overcome. I could also say "Magnets can influence compass needles, therefore we should use it to influence the minds of people who can't make up their minds."

If we didn't need food, we wouldn't have a need to do anything at all. There would be no purpose in working or living, we'd all probably end up sitting down and philosophizing constantly as there's much more free time.

Nah, I'm still a smoker, it doesn't have any nutritional value though, I still need to eat. I think everyone needs to eat and I don't think anyone out there has transcended physical limitations. You're saying that if those people are out there and do exist, they have no need to prove themselves... so to me it's like that Celestial Teapot theory. (And yes, me skeptic me, you're right about that!)

If I were to suggest that between the Earth and Mars there is a china teapot revolving about the sun in an elliptical orbit, nobody would be able to disprove my assertion provided I were careful to add that the teapot is too small to be revealed even by our most powerful telescopes. But if I were to go on to say that, since my assertion cannot be disproved, it is an intolerable presumption on the part of human reason to doubt it, I should rightly be thought to be talking nonsense.
