Arrow Ad link for some key words?

When did it start? Somehow I find it confusing, I am more accustomed seeing links that the member has made rather than those automatic ones.

It started a few weeks ago.

It is a bit confusing, because the style of the links is the same as normal links... but at least the other features aren't annoying (eg: it pops up and disappears very rapidly, rather than waiting 5+ seconds like on other sites).

Here's a case where it looks like it munched on a link ... and if one isn't careful on where they click in that link, they will get either the download or the intended article linked to. I made sure that I got the red/blue split, just so one could see how the links played out.

The color different is because I hovered over the Visual Studio part of the link.... initially it's not obvious that there are two links there.... which is the point I was trying to make.

Hey if it keeps the bills paid and the lights on here, I'm willing to put up with it. Doesn't mean I won't poke fun at it, and provided it isn't something that gets out of control.

As long as it doesn't interfere with where the links point to it is fine. If you needed help with something and had something like Need help Visual Basic and the ad link caused the link to redirect to a page advertising vb instead of the intended forum thread that would be a worry.

    Double underscore plague

    Those double underscore inernet.com pop-ups
just seem to have appeared .. and it is making
my IE browser really slow down. Anyone else
    experiencing this?

(oh yeah, my CPU pegs to 100% for about 10 seconds
while the page loads -- this just started about
    15 minutes ago.)

Yeah.... VBF is now using "smart tags" on the pages... as annoying as they are.... if it keeps the lights on, I'm all for it as long as it doesn't get out of control....

However... I have noticed a change in the loading of the pages that I am begining to question if I want to put up with.

They are annoying, but I figure I'll stick around as long as they aren't adding more gayness to the forum.

Yeah.. that's what I was trying to describe... takes longer, right?
Like around 5-10 seconds? (it used to be instantaneous for me)

Good point about paying the bill, but the sluggishness is maddening.

BTW, does your CPU get pegged at 100% for the loading duration?

These advertising links are downright annoying. Seems to be slowing down the website too. Such a shame this board had to go that route...

Ok, NOW I see it. Whenever the page loads, there is pause, though it is only 2-3 seconds on this dual core laptop, before the page can be navigated. I thought that was just an incidental thing, but now I notice that it is happening on every page. CPU usage on both cores gets pretty high during that time, though not to 100% (well over 100% if you add them).

    Shaggy

Per your post #5, I thought maybe my problem is that I blocked
the internet.com cookies. I removed that from the list, but no help.

Glad to see you are suffering too (even if not as badly as I am)

    Re: Double underscore plague

for me the avg seems to be about 3-5 seconds.... unless the page gets marked up a lot... I think it's because the tags are marked up after the fact, and not part of the page as it is originally sent to the browser.

I haven't notice CPU usage... but I hadn't thought to look.... will try it out on the next couple of pages though.

I know... but it keeps the lights on... one thing Spoo noticed is that it takes a toll on his CPU ... and I'm starting to notice it too. So far the most annoying part of it to me has been that it locks things up for about 3-5 seconds - a few times it's been a bit more - before I can do anything with the page.

I think you're right .. I noticed one lengthy post that initially appeared
with no mark ups, then a few seconds later, there were 4 mark ups.

Confirmed! The same thing here - this may cause some people to never come back...
Btw, I'm glad I saw this posting - I though there was something wrong going on with my ,computer (or browser at least).

Lights on isn't much use if nobody comes.

Forum posting is down all over the Web. Adding more ad-noyances in an effort to ramp revenues on the backs of a dwindling active user population would seem to spell "death spiral" to me. I wonder if we'll end up seeing NNTP revitalized as people throw in the towel on Web forums in disgust? At least the spam isn't inline there.

I just clocked something (sorry, I couldn't resist): it took 47 seconds to just refresh main page and then navigate to last post in this thread - before it would take I'd say 5 seconds.
This is not good... not at all.

It also happens with search result pages too... I use the "New Posts" link a lot... I also notice that there's something being loaded form the RealAudio directory that also seems to hand things up... I'll see of I can get a screen shot of the url.

I've seen them on a few pages, and they aren't as good as the ones we had before (which were made by our Admins).

I've done a few tests on the speed, and while the total time to finish loading the page is higher (about 3.8s without, 6.2 with), the time to load the actual posts does not seem to have increased.

Re: Ad link for some key words?

I'm seeing a 5-10 second delay with everything I click on ... even clicking the back button. It me 43 seconds to do Rhinos test in post 13. This is BAD. This board is a great resource, but if it becomes too cumbersome to use I will go elsewhere. And how does the forum software determine which words to make into links? Half of the links just pop up an empty balloon & the other half pops up the same ad (see post #9) that is irrelevant to the word it picked. What a waste. Wasn't the ads at the top of each page enough to keep the lights on? It was for years and they didn't hinder navigation. It's a sad day...

I'm seeing loads of them and, I must say, they're piggin' irritating.

The popups don't seem to bear any relationship to the keyword that triggers them; they're slowing down page loading significantly; and they keep popping up over what I'm reading and don't close off without my clicking on an x so small I need binoculars to locate it.

43/45 seconds is rather obscene, but it doesn't seem to be actually related to the ad's - I just did the same test in about 10 seconds.

Wasn't the ads at the top of each page enough to keep the lights on?
They were, but unfortunately that couldn't last forever... advertising revenues (for the entire web) keep on going down over time, and presumably costs (such as staff etc) keep on going up too.

At least we are only getting to this stage now, many other sites have been like it for several years.

Granted it's not taking longer to load the posts themselves, but until the page finishes loading (which is taking longer).... I can't navigate, click on a link, scroll, or do anything... and the jump on the CPU is nuts... normally I can use VBF and it dles around 10-15% ..... now it jumps to anywhere between 60-98% .... what gives?

All of what you mentioned, plus..

I just clicked Quote in another thread. The message window came
up immediately and I started typing, but nothing appeared at first.
I had typed about 20 characters before anything showed up.

I am not making these numbers up - it's exactly what happend and it does relate to this new innovation.
Also, there are no delays on "other sites" or at least they are not noticeable.
Sorry but someone has to "fix" it somehow - delays are unacceptable imho.

ps, I don't really want to flame the forum ... but ... these sort of things are arguably acceptable when you read article, however it's difficult to read and understand someone else's post and then try to reply to it while large messages are popping here and there (not to mention the delays that seriously affect navigation, typing, etc)...

Using Firefox I am not seeing any delays & navigation seems to be as fast as it was before. I was getting the delays with IE7. Can anyone confirm? How about IE8?

    Hey,

I can't say that I have seen any "delays" in loading the pages, just a slight delay in the "ads" popping up when I hover over it. I am using Google Chrome.

Rhino, what browser are you using?

I'm using IE8 and there is a definate lag once the page start loading. The CPU jumps to about 95% and I wait about 10 seconds to let the page finish before I can naviagate.
