    Access Is Denied

    C:\Users\Slyke>takeown /R /F g:
    ERROR: Access is denied.
I ran this command with administrator privledges.

This is an external drive. Works fine when I put it into Windows XP Pro (The last system I tried, but I have since reformatted it). I'm using Vista Premium.

I can scan disk it and no errors are reported - but strangely enough, I have to to chkdsk, and can't use the one in the tools tab from the properties box "The disk check could not be performed because Windows cannot access the disk.". I tried to take ownership of it, but the security tab doesn't show up in the properties window, yet is shows up for every other folder's properties window?

    Access is denied.
I'd expected that anyway though XD.

It also maybe prudent to mention that this is a 1.5TB WD harddrive. It has a hidden/secret partition on it that acts as a CD drive as well (Which has some software on it for the harddrive). I can access that CD drive and read files off that normally. It's no a real CD, but it just uses the file system of one so it can use the auto-run feature.

Does the drive work in Windows? Go to the Western Digital site and download the diagnostic software for your drive if you haven't already.

    Re: Access Is Denied

Hmmm... I booted up in Knoppix on my laptop and the drive works fine there. I can read and write data from it. It's definitely a permission problem. I will look up some commands that I can use in Linux to give it "Full Access" to everyone on windows machines.

I've already given it chmod 777, but it still doesn't work on Windows.

I'm just going to format it. SIGH. Knoppix is saying it has errors with permissions when I run cfdisk.

    Have you disabled the UAC?

Yep. First thing I did after installing Vista. It's doing the same on Windows 7, so I don't think it's specific to Vista.

I know this doesnt help with the problem but just so you know, Windows 7 uses UAC as well, its just not quite as aggressive with its prompting

chkdsk is supposed to fix security descriptors. However run diskmgmt.msc and try changing the drive letter to something else first.

    Re: Access Is Denied

When it's placed in, it says I need to format the disk (Comes up automatically). Yet it works fine in Knoppix.

Inside disk manager, it says the partition is a healthy NTFS file system, with 1.5TBs. In the properties window of the drive though, it says it has 0 bytes, and doesn't have a file system listed. Changing the drive letter doesn't fix anything. This is on Win7 and Vista.

I'm in the process of getting the data off it still and am going to format.

    Try this...

Download the "Tweak UI" for windows 7

You should be able to get the drive recognized using "Tweak UI" by clicking on My Computer, Drives, and check marking Drive F. It should do the trick....
