I suggest Ad-Aware, that's what I use. You would be suprised
at the number of Spyware programs out there, and maybe on
your system. I'm not trying to upset anyone, most if not all
of these Spyware programs are harmless, they just report information
about you and your computer to centralized servers through various means and methods. Basically it's one step up from cookies tracking
you, although that makes it sound harmless. To tell you the truth I'm
not sure of all the information that is collected on you and your
computer. I do know one thing.......I don't like it. Apparently it's
legal, some say ethical....I would argue it's not ethical, being that
everything is buried in fine-print disclosures (which no one reads).

So how do you guys feel about this Spyware stuff? Is giving up your
privacy for freeware software worth it? Or is this just the next step
in having no privacy on the internet?

I've been there, excellent site, he also has a spyware remover that works really good. it is called optout.

I don't think spyware is ethical, it is my computer and what I got on it is my business, not theirs. I mean so what if I got 10 gigs of porn, oops did I say that, I meant corn, ya that is what I meant.

Steve Gibson is alright I guess, although he does sensationalize everything. He also has a page where he probes your ports (Ouch...sounds painful) to see how easy bad guys can get at your computer. I wouldn't put too much faith in it, or him. Me thinks he is a little too paranoid

You can't be too paranoid with things like this. I've had so many different port probes you'd be surprised. Anyway, the masses need it sensationalising or they'll probably ignore it.

Ever since I started this post it seems like (everyone and his brother or sister) has been trying to scan my puter. My ports are starting to hurt

It was either this post or my other post about MSDOS 6.0 Source Code that started this. Maybe it's Bill himself.....although that might be a little beneath him. I can picture him in front of his computer though scanning the whole world......(muttering.....Your mine...mine....All mine)
