Linux Mint Gloria 7 / Ubuntu 9.10 Broadband Connection Problem

A few weeks ago I had installed Linux Mint Gloria 7, based on Ubuntu 9.04 on my Windows desktop to make it a dual boot system. My broadband internet connection works off the network connections in Windows. After setting up the connection in Linux Mint 7, it was successfully able to connect to the internet. So far so good.

I had ordered the Ubuntu 9.10 CD, which arrived a couple of weeks after I had installed Mint 7. So one morning I decided to overwrite the Mint 7 installation with Ubuntu 9.10. The installation went fine, I booted into Ubuntu, but now I find that the internet connection doesn't work. I followed the exact same steps as I did in Mint 7 to set up the connection in Ubuntu. But no luck.

Has anyone else had a similar issue?

On a sidenote, can I install Linux Mint/Ubuntu on a laptop (new/refurbished)? Will the basic functionality such as card reader, sound card, video card, network on a laptop work with Mint/Ubuntu out of the box?

Yes, you should be able to. Although I have not tried it myself. Also, since the Linux distros have their own drivers and the ability to search for the Linux drivers.

Re: Linux Mint Gloria 7 / Ubuntu 9.10 Broadband Connection Problem

@Gautam, I would say the Ubuntu 9.04 is a kernel around which the Linux Mint 7 Gloria has been built. But I may be wrong, because I have been a Windows guy for about all my life.

I installed Mint 8 and tried setting up the network connection, but the same issues persist. While the LAN seems to be working alright, I am not able to dial into my ISP and get connected to the internet. Which in Mint 7 was a breeze.

Here's my network setup (from Windows):

Under LAN Connections I have this:
Sify: LAN or Highspeed Internet: Connected: DM9601 USB To Fast Ethernet Adapter

This connection has a manual IP, Subnet mask, Gateway server and DNS settings defined.

    Under Broadband I have this:
NIVYAH: Broadband: Connected: WAN Miniport (PPPoE): nivyahbroadband (this is under phone # or hostname)

This connection has a servicename as its significant property. Then under the Networking tab > Type of broadband connection to make, it mentions PPPoE i.e. Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet. For this connection the IP, Subnet, Gateway as well as DNS are set to be assigned dynamically by the server.

In Linux Mint 8, the Sify connection has been set up under the Ethernet connections tab, and on assigning the IP/Gateway/DNS, I receive a message that my wired network is now connected. So I am guessing things are fine with this.

Coming to the broadband connection NivyaH, how do I set it up in Mint 8? I tried doing it under the DSL tab, but I cannot make it work. I entered the servicename same as in Windows, username and password same as in Windows and left the IPv4 settings to Automatic, hoping it would connect and fetch these settings. Not working. I changed the IPv4 settings to Manual and specified the IP/DNS/Gateway manually. Still no luck.

    Can anyone help me??

Another pis$er is sometimes when I try to edit the DSL connection properties, I am required to enter my password in order to authenticate. Almost always when this happens, even after entering the correct password I am shown "Insufficient privileges". When I am not asked to enter the password, I am able to change the properties alright. What gives?? I faced this exact situation with Ubuntu 9.10 as well.

Also what's the default password for root? I tried setting a password to the root account, which seemed to have been completed. But when I try to log into the root account, I am not allowed.

I think you would probably get more help on the networking issue at the Ubuntu Forums.

For the root password question: Read this page on the ubuntu documentation site. You shouldn't normally require login access to the root account. Everything is done using "sudo".

Re: Linux Mint Gloria 7 / Ubuntu 9.10 Broadband Connection Problem

Finally I got it sorted out. Seems Mint 7/8 or Ubuntu 9.04/9.10 don't have any UI for setting up a PPPoE over LAN connection. You have to use the pppoe-setup snippet for it. Also the pppoe.conf file is not installed by default.

I posted it in the Linux Mint forums, and it seems it's an already reported bug since Mint 7.

I am just pis$ed that I have to keep entering my password again and again. The keyring seems to be having a mind of its own, and it is a bother to be authenticating yourself for such tasks as mounting the hard drives.
