"new" ???? "new" ???? you've been a member since '00... and you think it's a new trend? Pfffft! Been going on for years... and will continue to do so. What you're seeing is the spike that happens every once in a while as terms come to a close and people realize they haven't been paying attention or have been goffing off and are in a panic because coursework isn't done. Fortunately, more often than not, these threads are fairly obvious to spot and tend to be dealt with accordingly. (and not always to the poster's liking).

Most of what I learned (and I am still learning...) was self taught either through books or www.vbforums.com Which brings us back to the point that Opus was trying to communicate...

I feel sad when people don't even go through the FAQ's which many members have taken pain to create. Now for example take your Excel tutorial... In how many threads I actually have to tell the members to go through it...

I remember one such occasion when I was actually frustrated and had to subtly vent it out....

Never ceases to amaze me, the level of patience I see around this forum. I have to walk away from those ones. Maybe beacause I have whole class of them to teach. I fthey do show up they come in late. They do not even bring their textbooks with them. They do not even bother to bring a pen and paper to take notes and no matter how many times I told them they would never make it through an Electronic Engineering degree with out a calculator I still had to out iin my time to find them where to buy one. Even then only one went out and bought one.

The subject of this thread is exactly the reason I created the Hitchhiker's Guide that's in my sig. The threads that annoy me the most are the ones that say "I tried something but it didn't work." ... no details. That's usually when I resort to my Toast, Doors and Eels reply.

So you are the guys I get so annoyed at calling when I need to call some place for tech support and get some guy with a thick Indian accent who somehow has the name of "tom" or "bob" and reads from a script?

You can never know as countries like India, China, Pak, Bangladesh etc have BPO's.

How do you know it is an Indian Accent?

As far as reading from script is concerned, that is very occasional. That happens only when there is a new joinee... Other wise be it Tech Support, Customer Service, Debt Management (This is what my company does) etc... 80-90% of them hardly use a script...

There are some BPO's which have to follow the script word to word and cannot deviate from the script. For example there was a case where this old guy from California calls and this is how the conversation goes...

Customer: I am Mr. XYZ. I have a complaint to lodge... My PC doesn't work.
Advisor: After exchanging welcome words... Can you make sure that the cord is plugged properly? (Which is usually the first question in the script)
Customer: How do you do that?
Advisor: (Explains the procedure as mentioned in the script.... ) And this is how you plug your computer. Is it ON now?
Customer (immensely satisfied): thanks the advisor and hangs up...

So I hope you see the point

Because we have tons of people from India that live in this area where I live, so I know what one sounds like. It isn't exactly like you can mistake someone from India with someone from China, even by voice.

Every time I have ever asked the location of the call center, it has always been India.

I got talking to somebody in an MS call center who had a vaguely familiar accent. Somehow, my time zone came up, and he mentioned that he was three hours ahead of me. Now, I happen to be in the Mountain Time Zone, and there is darn little land three hours ahead of that zone. A few islands, and part of the Canadian Maritime Province, so I asked him if that was where he was, and he confirmed it. I forget whether he was on Newfoundland or New Brunswick, but it sure is an interesting place to put a call center. They probably employ people during the winter pretty cheap. Heck, people probably pay MS for the priviledge of talking to another human.
