Vista VM, Win7

I have a dual core 3.5GHz computer that I was running WinXP until last December when I upgraded it to Win7 x64. In XP I installed VPC 2007 SP1 and created a Win98SE, WinME, WinXP (for when I went to Win7) and a Vista VM so I could test my apps in those different environments. I would periodically do Microsoft updates on the XP and Vista VM's as well. December I've wiped out XP and installed Win7 then installed VPC 2007 SP1 x64 and those VM's all run fine, except doing microsoft updates on the Vista VM, I can do MS updates on the XP VM but not the Vista one, anyone have any idea as to why?

Thats weird, I have a win7 box with a win 7 (a few actually, I love them) VM and they all get updates.

The thing that has me stumped is it would do MS updates when I was running it in vpc on WinXP (the XP vm's would do MS updates too) and now I'm running vpc (same version) on Win7 and only the XP VM's will do MS updates, the Vista one has a local network connection and that's it, no internet, it also doesn't see any computers on the network like my XP vm's do.

I'm thinking about setting this Vista VM aside and creating a whole new one using this Win7 comp as the host still and seeing if the new VM works fine when it comes to updating.

I think Win7 is better than Vista. I also installed Vista in my machine, after installing Vista system was very slow and also getting problem in installing SQL 2008.

Yes, that's what I think as well, however as a software developer I have to test my program on Vista as well as Win2k, XP & 7.

I have to do the same and with web browsers too since I'm not only a web developer but a programmer too.

Although I haven't noticed much of it lately, there was a period when we got a lot of pc's with update issues.

Now that I think of it, a common problem was Windows Search 4.0.
If you remove that update (control panel->software), it just might solve your problem.

Yea, me too, though I use IE Tester to test for the different versions of IE and I have multiple versions of FireFox installed all on my comp. I don't test in any other browser (haven't had a client who uses anything else yet).

Except that Search 4.0 is built into the OS, I'd have to look but I don't think it can be removed from Vista. Though Search 4.5 is much better in Win7.

But there was an update for it that corrupted the Windows Update somehow

Well I made a whole new vhd file and installed Vista Ultimate on it, this VM doesn't have network access either so it's not Vista in this case, it's gotta be how VPC runs on Win7 that's causing it to not work on the network.

Not necessarily. Check your network settings in VPC and within the VM itself. Check for connectivity to the web. It you can connect to the web, you should be able to get updates. Is that new VHD validated?

I've already checked the network settings both in VPC and Vista. VPC is set to use NAT using the actual network card on the PC, it's either NAT or disallow network connections altogether. In Vista both the fresh VM and the one I created last year can't access the local network or the internet, no matter how I configure it.

WinXP on the other hand works flawlessly both local network and internet using VPC's NAT. I reached a point a few weeks ago where I'll test it on Vista knowing it's not being updated and of course Win7 so if a user has a problem with a program I made and they're running Vista, I'll have to figure out how to diagnose it when the time comes, other than that this is looking like Vista is just being the problem OS as usual, nothing new.

there should be some kind of loopback adapter you use for network connectivity. When i used virtual pc, there was a help file with it that explained how to install it. If you are running more than one virtual machine at a time, it may be locking the card. The loopback adapter is the equivalent of a virtual hub. Not only will every vm get internet access, but they can see each other in network neighborhood for sharing files.

The complexity of this task is one of the reasons people don't like virtualpc 2007 and everyone is switching to vmware. You should give vmware player a shot. It's capable of reading virtualpc images so you wouldn't have any extra work, and it's free as well.
