Re: older version of MSN
I don't think you can... I know at one point in the past year, they made a change and then forced down the new version when msn messenger opened. I don't remember what the new version was when it happened, I just remember that I was very annoyed by it, and my msn messenger has never been the same since.
Other than that, as long as it is giving you a choice to upgrade or not, you should be able to ignore it... at least for a while.

Re: older version of MSN
I tried installing version 4.7 but it told me to install the new version. That was when I first ran the setup for version 4.7.
Edit:
I managed to install version 4.7 on Win7 although, messenger will not allow you to connect to the network (login). You receive a message saying:
You cannot sign in to MSN Messenger because you are using an old version of MSN Messenger.
Note: To upgrade MSN Messenger, you need to log onto this computer as a local administrator.

Re: older version of MSN
right... they changed something in their protocols that forces you to use the newer version. There's not a lot (if anything) you can do about it.

Re: older version of MSN
the network the older messenger uses doesn't exist any more. They are sharing their network with AOL now. Among other things, this allows you to IM aol members.
you still have options though. You could use the aol program, any number of free programs such as adium, or you could get the live version of messenger, which i personally had to install to stop some media center errors about "messenger is not installed" every time i started it even though it was.

I have the opposite problem with Live Messenger on my pc! It is reporting that messenger is still installed even though it's not. That is why I couldn't install version 4.7 on my pc.

don't forget it actually comes with windows xp and is built into outlook. Check your "add/remove windows components" list.

Yeah, I know! Although, my pc is running Vista and I have manually delete the Windows Live Messenger from the system then deleted the add/remove listing but it still picks it up. I tried looking in the registry but I didn't find anything either.

Re: older version of MSN
Adium only runs on OS X. For windows software, you should try Pidgin or aMSN.

don't confuse this with windows messenger. But in any case, parts of it are used by outlook express so you can't get rid of it completely.

Unless I'm mistaken Outlook Express isn't part of Vista?
Edit:
Windows Live Mail replaces Outlook Express in all versions of Windows Vista.

i am sorry but that is incorrect.
Windows live mail is a completely different program and is available for download only. In vista you get "windows mail" which is kind of a stand-alone version of outlook express, whereas outlook express was considered to be an integral part of internet explorer. Thus if you have any copies of internet explorer 7 or earlier installed, you've got at least part of outlook express. Windows live mail is a newer version that supersedes windows mail. It is a free download and works on any current OS from microsoft.
It is nearly impossible to completely remove messenger because of the integration of these programs. Even media center uses parts of messenger because it can read caller-id.

Sorry, my mistake! That was a spelling error on my part. I have always wondered why I would remove messenger from Windows then come back sometime later and find it has reinstalled itself.

Re: older version of MSN
On topic: As far as i'm aware (and trust me, i've researched for this answer) there is no way. I experienced the same annoyance and wasn't interested in upgrading. I've so far been unable to find any way to get around it, and i haven't found any examples of it posted around various forums either.
