    Music?

    So what kind(s) of music do you guys listen to?

    I'm usually into rock & heavy metal & some of the lighter rap. But I'm also partial to classic rock & some pop songs too.

    Re: Music?

    I listen to what ever helps... rock, classical, pop, rap, soundtracks, Scottish, Celtic, talk radio. The preference is usually towards something with a tempo and upbeat... I don't think I'd do much listening to funeral dirges.

    I listen to whatever's playing on 88.5 and you can too.

    If Coding Then
      Music = Classical
    Else
      Music = Classic Rock

    Re: Music?

    Out of curiosity, do you really listen to Classical when you are coding?
    I still cannot make up my mind about what music is best for coding. I know it must be something that would possibly keep me up and motivate me but, it's hard to find out what kind of music suits best for me.

    Re: Music?

    When coding I can only listen to classical or certain types of dance music. Anything with a high BPM or words just knocks me right off.

    As for general interest, I really like dance music but I really listen to anything. My missus finds it strange that at 23 years of age I know all the words to I'm gonna be strong by Gene Pitney. Currently, because of fallout 3, I am discovering 20's, 30's and 40's music.

    Re: Music?

    I agree with DeanMc, except that I don't quite know what he means by "dance music". I can't have words when coding. It's not that I am entirely non-functional, but I learned over the years that the quality of my thought process deteriorates considerably if there are words in the music, regardless of whether or not I am consciously paying any attention to them. Silence also appears to be fairly neutral or slightly negative, possibly just because I become more aware of other transient sounds.

    Therefore, when it comes to coding: If it ain't Baroque, I DO fix it!!

    I can't stand silence... I have to have something... I find myself too easily distracted if there isn't some kind of noise pumping into my auditory facilities.

    Yeah. Can't argue with that.

    In taxonomy, there is a constant feud between those who want to split groups of organisms into multiple species, and those who want to lump them into a single species. There's no right answer to those questions.

    Looks like music genre work the same as taxonomic genera.

    And I can't stand sound when I'm working...I get too focused on it rather than on what I'm doing. I have to have musical silence. All auditory silence would be preferable, but NO music whatsoever is a total must or I just can't work.

    I'm the same way at home...my wife learned a long time ago that if she wants production from me, all music MUST be turned off.

    Im on the split side, but the problem is it is very opinionated so what I think is ambient trance is not to other people!

    Re: Music?

    I have to say i also prefer instrumental music for when i am coding something like DJ Shadow or Thievery Corporation or the like i find particularly good as they have a nice rhythm to them and few words.

    I don't have to have music to code though, it generally depends on my mood and how noisy everyone else is in the office that day.

    As for my Music tastes generally i like most thing really apart from Pop music (well 99% of it) & death metal or bands like Slipknot.

    Its easier than saying all of these: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...c_music_genres
    I Just had a look at the above list, Wonky Techno ?@?!!!@?? *** ? half of those names have just been made up !!!

    There is no way there are that many different styles of Dance music, i mean what the difference between Euro dance, Euro House & Euro beat for instance !? Half of them seem to different names for the same thing !

    I mean, Post Disco !!! that could be any music recorded after about 1985 !

    Re: Music?

    Generally the sub divisions are to explain songs that don't quite fit. For instance, take DeadMau5, who is a house artist but take a listen to FML clearly not a house song but it also doesn't sound like any of the other genres so they make a new one. Don't be surprised that many of those are simple genres that contain two or so artists.

    Re: Music?

    For me, everything falls into 1 of 8 genres all other genres are invalid. For example Pop & Dance are the same; heavy metal; goth rock, death metal, most grunge/industrial are all just heavy metal. Most classic rock and rock all fall under rock. Opera isn't a genre, period. That's just me though.

    I tend to listen to a variety of music when coding and outside of working on the computer I don't really listen to music much at all, other than in the car.
