Re: Ice block machine
I believe Bill Gates has the patent on that idea. Along with breathing, ones, zeroes and protons.
I don't live here any more.

Re: Ice block machine
Junk yards.
Seriously. Why re-invent the wheel when you might be able to find some used appliance store that can sell you a whole working model for a couple bucks. The power demands won't be all that steep, and are probably printed on the device.
My usual boring signature: Nothing

Re: Ice block machine
Firstly, if you have decided to try building it yourself, which one are you going to build?
Secondly, here's a page that lists down various parts required for a type of ice maker (followed the FAQ Icemaker link on the last page of the HowStuffWorks section).

This page shows a basic icemaker diagram.

Oddly it resembles a PC cabinet. So if you have a used cabinet lying around at home, that would be a good starting point.
As an additional food for your thoughts, why not use an old PC cabinet for hosting this icemaker, and use the CD tray mechanism to eject the ice cubes out?
To make it more challenging you could attach a screen to it which shows the progress of the ice-making operation.
