I need a program that hide folders on portable hard drive WITHOUT the need to include the program in the hard drive . I tried "instant lock" but the trial period expired and it really works !!!
Thanks

Re: Hide folders on portable hard drive
Instant Lock is a scamware. It's is free to download and use for some trial period (the author purposely misleads us by saying it's a freeware), and after the trial period has been over, it will ask the users to buy the software. Since their files have been locked, the easiest option for many users to get access to their locked files again is to buy the software.

And just as a side note, my company's firewall/proxy/"orwellian thought police" software has marked the instantlock site as, quote, Spyware/Malware Sources, unquote.

Re: Hide folders on portable hard drive
hmm ok.
You know, i wonder if the OP knows that it's actually a built-in ability of windows to hide a folder?
for example to hide the c:\temp folder, you simply type from a cmd prompt
Code:
cd c:\
attrib +h c:\temp\
and you can add the +s tag as well and windows by default will keep it hidden even if the user enables "show hidden files or folders" because it's now marked as a system file.
Note you can change the hidden status in the right-click properties menu, but you have to use this tool to change the system status.

Let's say you're correct and the program never expires (which could never be true) , so this is not what i asked for . I ASKED FOR DIFFERENT ONE !!! i will not take the risk again and try this program for a month and have it expired and never show my folders unless i pay for it !!!

how can you be sure that won't happen with a different program?
oh yeah, you can't.
You could always protect your data by encrypting the folder with winzip or 7zip or winrar or even windows itself's zip folder support.granted the folder will still be there, but no one could open it.

i just spent time perusing the faqs on their website and it says it will not work on portable drives unless you purchase the full version, but will give you 30 day trial functionality. The lite version will not do this.

Re: Hide folders on portable hard drive
Well, I found Free Hide Folder which, can be installed on a removable drive/usb and doesn't require a payment or password to use the program. The only thing is that it doesn't appear to allow you to hide folders on the drive where the program is installed.
You could try this.

Free Hide Folder seems basic . It doesn't mention about hiding folders in if booted in safe mode . Cheers anyway.

Re: Hide folders on portable hard drive
Also found Hide Folders which, does what the first program does but this one can hide the folders on the same drive where the program is installed.

i understand, but if you reread my postyou will see it was to koolsid, not you. also you havent specified about these gigs of data butr it is quite simple to view one file at a time as windows treats zipped folders as folderstherefore you can browse them from any program

Is it windows-specific feature (can be run on windows only)?

Re: Hide folders on portable hard drive
zipped folders is built into windows since winme. Since they are regular zip files, even if you didn't have regular folder browsing, you could still view them with 7zip, which is pre-installed in some linux versions, and osx has a folder browser app as well.
