    Probably easy to answer but is there a way to check in vb if there's a mapi complient mail program installed?

    Find Mapi

    That's a good one...
    But try to look in the Registry for the key "mailto" and see if there's an reference to any app.
    else
    try to look in the Win.ini file for the tags [Mail] or [MAPI 1.0 Time Zone]!
