Ubuntu website
As some of you might know, and the rest of you are trying to ignore, Ubuntu 9.10 is out. But please, correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't this webpage look a bit too much like Apple's website?
Ubuntu website
I am hungry, and I have flu. Ubuntu doesn't help.

Not swine-flu I hope!
Everything that has a computer in will fail. Everything in your life, from a watch to a car to, you know, a radio, to an iPhone, it will fail if it has a computer in it. They should kill the people who made those things.- 'Woz'

In that case, get well soon. Drink gallons of water and suck on lozenges.

Somehow I find myself actually downloading the AMD64 version of Ubuntu 9.10.
Klegg, is this new release any good? I didn't bother to find out I just clicked the download button like a good little willpower-less consumer.

All they have done is improved the GUI interface for some programs (like the Add/Remove programs), added their own Dropbox program so they can get $$$, and made the icons look more n00b friendly. Otherwise, it is the same Ubuntu you know and hate.

On the contrary, there's alot of things you can do in Windows that you can't do in Ubuntu.
- You can't spend 10 minutes waiting for your computer to boot to a usable state. There's barely time enough to scratch your ass now.
- You can't expect it to crash 3 times an hour. Or year for that matter.
- You can't expect network connections to randomly fail for no reason. Networking just stay up for literally ages, how very boring of it.
Jesus, Ubuntu is so incredibly inferior. I'm pre-booking my copy of Windows 8 as we speak.

I wouldn't bother with Linux unless I was getting paid for it. Last time I tried it, it was an incredible pain in the ass. I personally don't have issues with Windows, never had any real crashing problems or any of the typical "windows sux because" stuff. The only thing I have an occasional problem with is home networking, I suspect that has a lot to do with being a programmer and not a network engineer. Seems to work pretty well for every company I've worked for. Linux schminux.

I have used both Linux (Redhat & Knoppix) and Windows. This OS debate is futile. As long as you can get the job done, using a tool you like, everything's good.

Re: Ubuntu website
Games? Can you play Windows based games? If you can't play Oblivion, what good is it?
On the other hand, I have had XP running without any issues for years. Crashing three times a day? Never happened (except for Oblivion, which has never been a particularly stable game). Crashing three times a year? Maybe, I tend to forget things after a month or so, though. Ten minutes to boot? Actually, less than a minute (except at the office, and that's their fault). Network connectivity? Whether wireless, LAN or internet, connectivity has always been flawless.
Therefore, I say again: GAMES!

Look at my sig. The user experience was not good.
Slower than a crippled Vista
More buggy than a fresh XP install
Look! Down the road, some 50 miles behind the drunken snail.
It's Ubuntu!

One reason to love Linux: After a new distro comes out, it is a perfect excuse to get high on permanent marker pens.

Re: Ubuntu website
Just curious wossname, but have you tried this Ubuntu release? This is the first time I've actually installed it on any machine and it is actually pretty good, for once.

Kloggs:
Yeah I'm using it right now! I've using the AMD64 version of it on my new laptop and it's pretty damn good so far. It's the first time I've used a 64 bit OS and it seems to perform very well indeed. Boots fast, loads apps fast, and the hardware support appears to be good straight out of the box.
And I was very impressed with the installer software. I don't mean Wubi - Wubi us a bag of nails and doesn't work. But just using the install ISO as nature intended (boot straight off it and install Ubuntu alongside Vista) worked exceptionally well.
It takes a lot to impress me these days and Ubuntu 9.10 has done so. Interestingly, dual-screen setup took only a few clicks and looks great.
My first impression was "Oh look it's a RedHat clone" judging by the standard desktop layout. This is actually a compliment because RH is my fave linux distro.
I've been using it for a sum total of 11 minutes now so I'd better get along and start playing with it!
For anyone who's interested, my Laptop specs:
- Acer Aspire 7535
- ATI 3200 HD graphics (nothing flashy, this isn't a gaming machine by any measure)
- AMD Athlon X2 64 bit
- RAM: 3GB DDR2
- HDD: 320GB
- 17" widescreen LED screen (nice )

Update - Awesomeness has occurred!
I finally have a distro where reading NEF files (the raw images from my Nikon DSLR) has built-in support! And only a single package had to be installed to convert them to files readable by GIMP. Ubuntu 9.10 is my new best friend (behind strong liquor).

So is modern Linux actually user friendly then or do you still have to compile your own driver every time you want to use a new printer?

Re: Ubuntu website
I use my printer for printing out maps. Very expensive and bulky to buy them, and there sure aren't many online options where I use them. If printer support is an issue, that's just another strike against Linux....though if it doesn't run Oblivion, that strike is just beating a corpse.

The only time I've ever had a printer issue was with a stupid Lexmark wifi printer that doesn't work under Vista either.
Lexmark really know how to suck at making stuff.

Ubuntu is OK. I personally don't get what is so amazing, but it is alright I suppose.
If there was one distro I'd recommend to anyone with a netbook, it would be Jolicloud, hands down.
It makes me think Ubuntu feels outdated. It runs brilliantly on my Eee PC 1000HE for comparison.

If the developers haven't naturally ported it onto Linux, there is a 50/50 chance that the Windows version can run under WINE.

Even when I started Linux, I never really needed to compile my own printer drivers.
Evidently, there will be greater and greater support for more hardware. If you want decent results, find out if there is any drivers for your printer. If that seems to hard, try adding your printer to the Ubuntu Live CD. If that fails, Mark Shuttleworth is the guy who you want to talk to.
