Dream Theater
I'd like to thank Atheist and TimeShifter for shouting at me to buy some Dream Theater albums.
They were right.
It's like I've woken up from a coma after 29 years of deafness to find that the world sounds a whole lot better than I ever imagined it could.
I salute them.

<sigh>I don't think I've listened to any DreamTheater in at least a decade but I used to love 'em. I might have to do some YouTubing tonight.

It's a grower, really. I absolutely adore al three albums I bought the other day ("Black Clouds & Silver Linings", "A Change Of Seasons" and "Scenes From A Memory"). I've been listening to them constantly (eg 15+ hours a day) ever since.
BC&SL's "Take your Fingers from my hair" is just sublime and really demonstrates DT's wide range of aptitudes. Great vocals and some unbelievable guitar work.
But it's the production that really surprised me. This music is flawless (IMHO), not a note out of place not a beat skipped, it's truly utterly breathtakingly amazing.
It's the best music I've ever heard in my life. Wish I'd heard of these guys sooner.
I don't live here any more.

Re: Dream Theater
I also bought a King Crimson album today on the (considerable) strength of DT's cover of "Larks Tongs in Aspic".
I'm gonna need a bigger sound system!

If you haven't already heared of them you also might like Opeth. Their songs are vey much like BC&SL's. Long and complex with many layers of sound and style switches during a piece. Vocally they are different though as Opeth switches between, and sometimes mixes, clean progressive vocals and death growls. If you want examples, look on Youtube for Face of Melinda and Blackwater Park. Find their live performances of those songs from the Roundhouse Tapes. Those 2 songs really highlight Opeth's range of style.

Re: Dream Theater
I enjoy Opeth too, and I've seen them live twice, last time was this friday when I also saw DT.
Mr Åkerfeldt has a fantastic voice.

Re: Dream Theater
I just got the new Nelly Furtado album. It's good, but all in Spanish. I actually find pop music is better in a foreign language that I don't understand, as the inevitable banality of the lyrics is then less of a distraction from what can be some really good tunes.

I've been getting really in to new bands/artists since getting my new job. Wosso pointed me to Dream Theater and I was impressed.
Muse's new album is good. The new Paramore album is good too.
