Wireless networking?
Ok little problem here, I want to connect a mates pc to mine, and the only way is thru wireless networking, I currently have a LAN running and I want his pc to be able to see all 3 my pcs, but I dont want to have to get a Access point as they are VERY expensive.
Code:
A ~~wireless connection~~ D
Existing network>> |
B
|
C
pc A - has a standard network card, and a wireless network card.
My question is, Will is be possible for pc D to see PC B and C? and how can I get around this it I cant?
cheers!si

Just like ours
Is it not possible to connect this wireless thingy (sorry I have no idea how they work) into the hub. Doesn't it just act like 1 long cable?

Yes, but to put in into a hub it requires a access point, the cheapest I have seen is £300

So you have no spare ports on the hub? Damn. Or does it just not fit in the hub?
How many NIC's has this "server" got?

Yes i have ports on the hub, just i dont want to pay for a access point (£300+) to put in it.
My "server" has one NIC, but im asking if i put the second wireless card in it....look at the pic above.

That's what I was thinking, if you put a second NIC in the server. I reckon it should be able to see B and C. Best to make sure though before splashing out if you can take a NIC from C and put it in A temporarily, try out the configuration and if D can see A and B, then your sorted. As I said, it should be able to in theory.
Better still, get DUN Server running on the server, hook it to a phone line and use your mates to dial into the server as a test. If it can browse A, B and C, wicked.

Well C is my laptop, and Im gonna get another network card from work (as my old 10Mbit ones are just *****!!!)
So you thing that it will see it then?
And yes, if he dailed in (it doesnt have to be a DUN server) He would be able to see the whole lot....now im thinking that it is possible....but what about thru win98SE with two network cards?

In theory it should, but as we all know, nothing is proven until tried. I'd be very surprised if it didn't work, at least after a little tweaking in Network CP.
I might go see if this DUN Server thing works. I have 1 PC that isn't in the network...

Just talking to my boss...if a NT machine is set up as a router/bridge it will work...so i will probaly install NT3.51 on my old laptop and hide it away.

I run this configuration at home.
All are win2k. The Access Station and the wirless card (laptop) are both about £130 each. Instead of an Access Station you could use another card (i.e. card to card, but it's the same price, so there's no point). The make of equipment is Buffalo. Is this the kind of thing you're after?

The access station is usb into the Server (which already has the regular nic and an adsl).
The reason I use Buffalo equipment is because Buffalo can't card-to-card from advanced server. But considering it's the same price for the Access Station (called Air Station) as it is for another card, i don't care. Plus, i can have as many wireless conXions as i like into the Air Station. The range is the normal range for this sort of stuff (i can't remember what it is). There's about 3 or 4 makes out there doing this sort of stuff (WaveLan, Cisco etc) but buffalo seems to be the cheapest in the UK (i think WaveLan is the industry leader, but i also think there all built on the smnae chipset anyway). I got mine about 6 months ago, dead easy to set up, and haven't had a problem with it. Got mine from Tottenham Court Rd, so you can always do the haggle (and if you're down that way on a saturday, try the computer fair for cheaper prices).

Well they range from 150foot(30M) to 500foot, and I need more than 30M (about 35M)
Do they have a site?
Also the USB station... how long is the cable? I might beable to get it up into the attic for a better reception
And I think Tottenham Court is a little out of my range

Access point (Air Station):http://www.buffa******.com/products/...ion/index.html
Cards:http://www.buffa******.com/products/...wlipcml11.html
From the specs it says transmission distance is
Indoor 80ft. Outdoor 165ft. (11Mbps)
However i supsect those figures are quite conservative.
