Not Word sales by itself but only when packaged on new computer system sales.
For their part, Dell and HP are basically arguing that it's unfair for them to get caught up in the dispute between two other parties, and that the injunction against the sale of Word (or the inclusion of it on new computers) would be devastating to their businesses.

Apparently it's been brewing for a while.
The spat involves Microsoft's use of XML, which became a default file system beginning with Word 2007 and the new ".docx" format that it uses. i4i has a patent over the use of XML as it relates to Microsoft Word -- granted way back in 1998 -- and naturally it sued Microsoft in 2007 after the company began offering a similar feature out of the box. ANd sure enough, the court said that Microsoft's implementation of XML violated i4i's patent.
How on earth can you have a patent on the usage of an open standard such as XML? I'm certain the implementation that i4i uses and the implementation that Microsoft uses are completely different. It's these pathetic blanket patents. I bet if I got a patent to use XML and automobiles together, within the next 10 years I'd be able to sue someone because they decided to store internal automotive computer data into an XML structure... sad, really sad.
I doubt we'll see even a hiccup in Word sales from this though.
It's almost as is there a patent for such and such? Lets create one... Even if it is totally no needed and does not make sense.
