Developer.com is Now New and Improved

    http://www.developer.com/

We updated Developer.com today. Take a look at the site and let me know what you think! We are still working out a few minor bugs, but overall it seems to be up and running cleanly.

    Take a look!

Design of the entire site looks kind of messy - it's difficult to find what you need.
Some sort of menu on the side (left perhaps) would make it much simpler and I think more presentable too.
Also, why isn't content filling the entire screen but only center - in wide screens era it's a huge loss of real estate.
These are just "first impressions" - I'm sure once you start navigating you'll find more incoveniences.

I'm going to be honest here: it's a good site with a lot of useful content but upon first glance the main page is really cluttered. I like how you have links along the top row easily navigate to the various sections, but listing 4 to 7 "top" articles per section causes things to kind of blur together about half way down, might want to bring it down to 2 maybe 3 top articles per section.

When you get down to the line where it has the "Local Guides", Highlighted Tutorials & On the Forums I only skimmed it as I wasn't even sure what that content was about. I also noticed, you don't have anything showing in the title bar, you're <title></title> tag is blank.

Other than that the general layout is really good and maintains content positions when I shrink/expand the window, I like the logos too btw.

    /my two cents

i would have to agree it's a bit cluttered. the bold font used at the top section with the 12345 articles is unreadable and hurts my eyes(Not sure if these are adds)

I like the BBC stye Top 5 in the lower left.

Never used it before but looks to have some intresting stuff

That MPU advert is badly placed, it's too attention grabbing. The top stories idea is a good one.

The site is too cluttered! You need to spread the items out a bit.

Re: Developer.com is Now New and Improved

I'm sorry but it still looks like a creation of the 90s. It is a strip full of text running down the centre of the screen. Proper use of white space and better visual separation between page elements would go a long way toward improving its appearance, but it really doesn't look as though much thought, if any, was put into this design. It looks more like a link directory than a brand.

I have one suggestion: The breadcrumb trail at the article level is good, but this needs to be extended to cover the section level as well. For example, clicking into 'Java' from the front page leads you to another page which looks very similar to the front page, and lacks a clear path back.

But that's a small nitpick where a comprehensive rethink would be more appropriate.

I agree it reminds me very much of a site you land on when you mis-type a URL and its just full of adverts/links
