Unhappy VB and Flash Action Script 3

Hello everyone, its been ages since I have been here....still smells a bit

Anyway my question I pose to you all is about the flash.ocx control and action script 3. We currently use flash documents that use action script 2 and it works all fine and dandy, now however we have a new flash programmer starting who insists on using flash 10 with action script 3. Apparently this is very different so I wondered if anyone else has had to do this. I am currently having problems with

    1) _root no longer exists. I can't find how to set a variable anymore as it no longer works

    2) Callfunction on the ocx wont work. We tried using the 'invoke' method but it just returns an automation style error on the flash. (We didnt need this before so its completely new)

This forum post is just looking for some pointers on where to start when changing over to AS3. I hope someone else has done this and give me some tips and pointers
