Dashboard lights
The illumination bulbs in my car's dashboard (or instrument cluster) burned out and so I can't see what speed I am going at night. The service place charges way too much to fix it, so I want to fix it myself. Yesterday, I removed the dashboard from my car and replaced the 3 illumination bulbs. They did indeed appear to be burned out. However, when I put the dashboard back in, I still had no backlight on my dashboard. Do you guys have any ideas as to what other problems could be that would cause this issue?

Re: Dashboard lights
Rats... I was hoping to find paradise... oh well.
At anyrate, if the lights are good, time to check the fuse. It also wouldn't hurt to keep an eye out for an electrical short... blowing all three bulbs AND the fuse is a little suspect.

Re: Dashboard lights
I checked the fuses before and after changing the bulbs, and they aren't blown.

Re: Dashboard lights
Check the wires connecting the bulbs in the dashboad. Trace it all the way down... Try and smell them (I am serious)... Do you get any burning smell.

Re: Dashboard lights
Alright. I fixed it. I had checked the interior fuses, but not the fuses in the engine fuse box. In that box, there was a fuse for the tail lights that was blown. According to the schematics, the interior illumination and the tail lights are in the same circuit. So I replaced the tail light fuse and now the interior illumination works again. That also explains the issue of no tail lights with headlights on issue I also had.

Did you try closing all windows and restarting your machine?

Re: Dashboard lights
My car has a kick ass heads up display right on the front windshield. Sometimes, I turn all interior lights off (except for the radio on the dimmest setting) and drive around jamming tunes - all vehicle related information pops up on the front windshield (windscreen for you limeys). It's really cool until I remember that I'm not really going anywhere and not really doing anything other than wasting time in a really cool way until I get back home to prepare for work again. Dammit. And people wonder why I drink a lot. :/

If InSynch comes with Ford cars, that would explain the decline of the US auto industry.

Personally I'd have just strapped a torch to the steering wheel. When the catch went on my back door I ran a piece of electrical flex between the rear door handles and pulled it tight enough to hold the door shut. I drove around for about a month with it like that. Luckily I never got pulled over.
