    "SharePoint is saving Microsoft"

The title of this blog post is a quote from the article, Microsoft’s SharePoint Thrives in the Recession; however, my quote is taken a bit out of context. In truth, however, SharePoint is doing very well. In fact, we launched a site focused specifically on SharePoint. If you haven't already checked it out, stop by http://www.SharePointBriefing.com. It is the place to find regularly posted SharePoint articles!

Well MS is certainly getting a bundle from the Air Force for SharePoint.

I've never understood the value of sharepoint... but I think thats because of the way we use it at work. We basically just stick files on it and so all it is to me is a prettier (but much slower) version of explorer. Perhaps someone can enlighten me as to what the benefits of using it are?

general announcements that are easily organized by department... how's that different from the folder structure of the departments? The files can be anywhere... we've got tons of files stored all over the place... this allows them to "appear" in the same area. At my last job we also used is as a web front end to TFS... allowing it easier and faster to get to the issue and organize them. Not only that but it was used to version the documents... want to make a spec change? click the edit button and it woudl check out the file to you. When done, save and close, it checks it back in, stamps it with your name and the date time. At my current job we also use it for schedualing training... on the back end it's just an excel file... on the front end, it's a web form.

When used right, it can be a great way to share info and collaborate. But if it's being used for the save of being used or isn't setup right, it's a big waste.

How do you do that? The only option I've seen is to just upload files to sharepoint, which basically creates a copy in the sharepoint database of the original file.

There is also versioning which can save your you know what lol

You can have a repository of files and then link to them from any page just like a website.
