Do you want the best web dev platform out there?
This guy does

Perhaps the burke should consider using a standards supporting browser instead of staring cluelessly into his coffee cup.

IE8 is also the best traffic warden out there, the best water-borne disease out there and the best abortion clinic out there.

Just out of my own curiosity since I do mostly client development and not so much web stuff, what standards compliance is IE8 lacking?

It failed ACID 3, even though the W3C hasn't elected to make it an official test yet
I thought it also failed some versions of ACID 2 after beta for one reason or another...

No, but claiming you are the best web dev platform in an advertisement without being able to pass web standards is a contradiction.
I also kind of like the google chrome colors too

Safari too I thought...
Then again...IE still holds 90% of the market anyway so nothing else can really be considered mainstream...

Not really. You're assuming that the Acid tests are a comprehensive web compliance suite. They're not. They test specific things in the latest web standards. Don't get me wrong - I don't like or use IE myself, but the oft-cited quip about Acid tests and browsers is completely pointless.
If you make a page following standards in FF and you don't have to change anything to get it to work in IE (and vice versa) then the browsers are doing alright. That's the best place to cite examples.

Ya...but I think the reason standards are becoming more and more popular is for that reason
Who's to say which browser is rendering correctly vs. the code being written incorrectly?

Re: Do you want the best web dev platform out there?
If W3C finalizes the draft, then it's a proper failure for browsers that don't comply.
I rule out the Acid tests because they are not a true representation of standards usage in the real world. It doesn't matter if Opera scores 5000 or Firefox scores 20. Acid is designed to push standards to the limit by creating 'radical' tests. What I'm trying to say is that the Acid test is not a certificate of awesomeness or even compliance. Let me repeat that - the Acid tests are not a certificate of compliance and anyone who thinks so is sadly, sadly mistaken.

I agree with what they are doing though. The current W3c standards pass IE and Firefox, and neither knows what to do with CSS. Of course, this is just my opinion and not that of the web community. In theory if the code is written correctly then the pages won't display incorrectly

IE fails because it doesn't have Adblock Plus whereas FF wins because it has one.
That's IMO though.

Re: Do you want the best web dev platform out there?
IE8 fails because Microsoft can't make up theirs minds what styles, etc to use! Look at IE6 and IE7 they are both different when displaying pages and so is IE8 there is no template the styles they use.

Thank you - I too get quite tired of people making this claim. The Acid tests have little practical application.
As for "the best web dev platform out there," I don't know how I ever got by without the awesome combo of Firefox and FireBug. IE8 has an interactive DOM inspection tool now too, but it's so lame and slow by comparison.
