I find that the greeting: "Shove it!" tends to defeat all but the most zealous high-street leaflet peddlers.

It is best exclaimed just as you make eye contact with them, timing is all important.

it's all part of the guilt way of getting you to do something. They give you something (such as a flower aka hari krisna) and then you feel obligated to take whatever else they are offering such as a sermon, bill, etc. Quite common and proven effective.

    Re: "please take leaflets"

A grocery store I went to yesterday had a couple of Greenpeace cadets soliciting shoppers, and the store posted a sign by the entry way stating, "We do not condone soliciting regardless of the cause; please feel free to ignore them without feeling guilty."

Of course... why they didn't just tell them to scram, is anyone's guess...

Here's what you need to do when you see an unscrupulous leaflet person.

Get a stick and put on some sun glasses. Now, pretend you are a blind person and walk into them with your stick, poking them as you do. Exclaim how sorry you are, but keep poking them with the stick. Make sure you poke their hands so they drop their leaflets.
My monkey wearing the fedora points and laughs at you.
