I spent the past weekend trying to figure out what the name for a game was that I played before I even went to Primary school. The objective was quite simple: Move around, shoot little aliens that only poped up from the four corners of the playing field.
I can't desribe the game in detail (this was quite a while ago) All I can remember was that I played it as a kid when I was 4 / 5 years old, and it was number 1 on a blue 16-in-1 game cartridge with a little "pac-man" figure on the front. Also, it was a two-player only game.
Seeing as I don't have Photoshop in the office, this is the best I could come up with in MSPaint. The game screen used to look like the below picture.
Does anyone remember Gravitar. It was like a combination between Lunar Lander and Asteroids. That was one of my favorites back in the days when I would visit video arcades.

Oh the excitement we had in the old pizza parlor where we sometimes hung out, we would all crowd around and watch as each of us tried to beat the new game that had just come out "Pong"
Thanks

Does anyone remember that game where your character looked like a pie, but with a chunk eaten at the end? If I remember, that pie would go on to eat other ghosts.
I sound crazy, but this was a fantastic game at the time. Massive hit in the arcades.

Mortak Kombat was cool because it used a "K" instead of a "C". This is possible because the sounds of these two letters are phonetically ambiguous.
So you see, the designers had done something hip and trendy with words. Why do you try playing with letters too? Ask an adult to help you if you get stuck.

If I remember korrektly, Mortal Kombat became kool simply bekause it was so violent, the BBFC was invented.
Ever fed up with those 18 stickers on games/videos/etc? Blame Mortal Kombat.
Actually I had a big thing for Alien Storm. Bought it recently and its meh, turns out that nostalgia makes you think things where better than they where.

I would imagine those would only bother people under the age of 18? In which case mom/dad needs to say "OK".
I think that is valid considering it gives parents a chance to get an idea of what the game contains. I personally would not want my (theoretical) young child playing GTA, but many parents have no concept of what these games contain, and they just buy them since it is what the kid is asking for.
I think it is actually ESRB that rates games here, I guess they are a US only entity, and games are rated differently in different places (most likely case).
i will grant you this, considering the other game was a flagrant copyright violation and in fact resulted in a lawsuit, but not many people owned the equipment necessary to play the original.

i thought it was kind of funny that they turned the blood into sweat in the nintendo version (and then had a secret code to make it blood again)
The game, as newer versions were released in the arcade, gave more and more ridiculous stuff happening on the screen at once, for no apparrent reason. A witch flying by the moon, pictures of the programmers flying by, BABALITIES! I mean, COME ON! Babalities?!? Really?!? There's a reason people lost interest. The programmers were nuts. And frankly street fighter was more fun anyway.

In the SNES version, they did have sweat instead of blood. This was Nintendo's doing (apologies if the apostrophe is wrong :S), since for some reason they didn't want their console to be linked with that sort of violence. They also changed fatalities so they were less gory overall. The japanese SNES version also turns grey when a violent fatality is performed, and finally, changed the word "Fatality" on the end bonus screen to "finishing moves"
The code that you are talking about only applies to the Megadrive version. I'd know, since I had the Megadrive version, and it was so satisfying hear Scorpion say "GET OVER HERE!" in the intro bit.
I don't remember a witch flying past the moon, but I do remember something to do with the moon, which apparently could unlock some bonus thing. Mortal Kombat was known for its chuck-full of easter eggs, and yes, they were wacky, but that's what made it so fun. The babalities and friendship moves was included to mock those people who claimed Mortal Kombat was too violent at the time. As you may know now, the later games do not have such fatalities, since, well, this sort of violence is normal in videogames.
Finally, I seriously doubt people lost interest. If you talk to most gamers, they pretty much know and love Mortal Kombat. While Street Fighter was good, it just didn't have such a fun "edge"/gimmick. Sure, beating the crap out of cars and barrels is nice, but once in a while, you might want to do some real damage *
*Despite what you may take from this last paragraph, I love both game franchises equally :P
