Re: No IE with EU version of Win7
Did anyone see the RSS Feed for the BBC?
"Microsoft Ships Ie7 Without Browser"
Some truth in that somewhere
As for the question, tbh I think its a bit stupid. Most people don't care what browser they use as long as they have one and they really don't want to be concerned with finding one.
Microsoft do say however that they have made it easy to install from the OS.

I don't know why Microsoft didn't just include Internet Explorer as an optional install (include it in the package) but ask the user if they would like to install it.
when you quote a post could you please do it via the "Reply With Quote" button or if it multiple post click the "''+" button then "Reply With Quote" button.

Because of the competition laws.
The whole thing thought is getting silly now.

Pfft, use telnet.
I agree, it's getting silly now. Opera is going as far to say that it's just not good enough. What more would they like now, Windows 7 unbundled from Windows 7?

I can picture the note text on the box!
Note: Windows 7 not included!

Hakon Wium Lie doesn't say why — or in fact say anything substantial at all — in that vacuous article.
I agree it is silly to suggest what a vendor can and can't bundle with their products. But this absurd situation is just a product of the monopoly Microsoft already have over the OS market.
Do the EU courts care that Apple bundles Safari with the Mac OS? I suspect not.

Re: No IE with EU version of Win7
But OSX doesn't have a monopoly over the market. If it does(ha ha), I'm sure (or rather, justifiably hope) that the EC goes after them.
But then end users will need to get IE (probably) to get the browser of their choice. Maybe this is another example of the distance that courts of law have from technology. Remember when a judge ordered torrentspy to log every IP address and everything in memory?
But yeah you're right - it'd be ideal to have laissez faire and let the market evolve on its own, that doesn't happen as is proven by the EC fining companies and governments doing bailouts.

Coming soon to a EU Court.
"Microsoft ships notepad with every version of windows!"

Re: No IE with EU version of Win7
Perhaps the problem is more that the boundaries of the operating system are not clearly defined. Should the browser be part of the operating system, or should it be an addition to it? It cripples functionality to leave it out, yet it cripples competition to leave it in.
In an ideal world, an OS installer would ask the user which browser (or media player, etc.) they would like to install. Problem solved and most people will be mostly happy.
On a tangent: I wonder if anyone will go after car makers for including satellite navigation systems in their vehicle consoles. Isn't this bad for the car GPS market?

Re: No IE with EU version of Win7
Yea, the way I think of it is Do people care? and usually the answer of a standard user is no. As long as sites display correctly.
Good point about the GPS makers, you could relate it to anything really.
Its a tough one, but the idea of all this is supposed to be to make things better for consumers, however this latest move doesn't really do that.

Re: No IE with EU version of Win7
you could also argue the same about car radio manufacturers.
I fully agree with the above statments in regards to it being silly it really is.

How about tire manufacturers? Where does it stop?
