ShowDown at High Noon : Internet Explorer 8 Releases Today

Watch out Chrome. Stand back Firefox. Move over Safari. At high noon (EDT), Internet Explorer 8 is stepping out of beta and into the streets as a released product.

"Customers have made clear what they want in a Web browser -- safety, speed and greater ease of use," said Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft. "With Internet Explorer 8, we are delivering a browser that gets people to the information they need, fast, and provides protection that no other browser can match."
IE 8 is touting better security. It also brings new features including Accelerators, Web Slices, and Visual search suggestions. You'll be able to download Internet Explorer 8 starting at noon today from http://www.microsoft.com/ie8.

Cool... I've moved from using Firefox & Chrome at home to using IE8 almost exclusively. It loads faster, runs cleaner and actually renders things as they should be. Firefox has become what previous IE versions and even Netscrape became - bloatware. I can click on Firefox, then start up IE8, pull up my home page in IE8, and navigate to another page, all while Firefox is still just trying to get up off the floor.

Now if only they will solve the problem of IE tabs crashing when you close them. I don't mean that this is a rare occurance; it happens with EVERY tab I close.

Have you reported the problem? I haven't heard of any issues with it... as I noted above, I've been using it (the beta) for a while now, all without incident... and this has been on XP, Vista, Windows Server 2003, & Windows 7 RC.

It will without any problem, however you will be asked to install all compatible (and mandatory for IE8) updates or install won't continue.

Ah, That reminds me I need to covert my website to IE8 compatibility! Are there any issues I should be aware of before converting my website for IE8 compatibility?

Ah ok! I tried the compatibility mode in IE8 but it didn't seem to do anything! I might to doing something incorrectly though? At the moment the "Compatibility View" under "Tools" is grayed out even though I've added the site I wanted to make compatible to the list.

The first few times, yes, but it got old with every single tab I closed, and every time I shutdown IE entirely. Until they fix it, I'll stick with Chrome for the things I don't absolutely need IE for.
