What about the strangers you ride with in trains? What if they talk to somebody else on their phones?

Conversations about the weather. They are meaningless, they serve no purpose but to find a common ground when you don't really have anything to say. Just be quiet. Stop talking. Don't tell me how 'miserable' it is outside, I'm not interested in connecting with you at a basic social level.

I annoy the heck out of them. I'll pretend to speak in my phone, but I'll be replying to the words spoken by stranger riding next to me.

stranger:How's mom doing?
me: Mom's not doing too well. The doctor's have upped her medication, which has lowered her immunity.

This only works if the stranger is speaking in a language familiar to me. Otherwise I have to try and zone out of the conversation.

Now that is a great idea. My only problem is that I don't have a cell anymore
(my Nokia 2190 doesn't seem to work these days). I guess I could fake it and
hold my right hand up to my ear...

Huge annoyance to me: people who go to a fast food restaraunt where they know they are going to be asked what they want... and they don't have a clue. Similarly, the people who order for a small army, without actually bringing the army. What's worse, I ran into a combination during lunch today... six sandwiches, and not a clue what she wanted... the fact that she lived up to the stereotypical "sista" (rude, loud, generally obnoxious) didn't help my first impression of her much, either. For goodness sake, lady. You alone are holding up a line of a dozen people, all three workers behind the counter are focusing on YOUR order, and you don't even have the decency to say "please" or "thank you"? Come on.. that's just plain cold.

Add to this: the lady who doesn't know what she wants didn't start thinking about it until it's her turn to order, she'd just had 10 to 15 minutes waiting in line to figure it out like everyone else.

There's an economic term to explain this behavior. I cannot recall the name, but look up "Barry Schwartz" and "choice". You should get it.

Re: Pet Peeves

You're missing the point:

fast-food: nothing fancy, a restaraunt designed to serve the same food every day, and do it fast. Subway does not have a complex menu. I go to fast-food shops because they make the food fast, and I can get on with my life. Miss Noisy in front of me who's ordering 7 sandwiches without a clue as to what she's doing is a bit of a hinderance to the whole "fast" idea.

There's a big difference between the indecisiveness felt when going to a brand new, high-end restaurant (where you have all the time you want to order, you expect the food to take a while, you also expect the food to be very good, AND you didn't have plans that night), and that felt when you go to Burger King (other people are waiting on you, you expect the food to be made quickly, you don't expect it to be that great, and you want to get on with life). Which one is more annoying?

I know, don't get me started on subway, I worked one for 5.5 years and was assistant manager for 3.5 of those years. One of the things I hated most was the fat lady who ordered a dozen subs at a time (taking her time with each one) all the while she was leaving boob smear marks on the rounded glass as her order moved slowly down to the cash register. Very gross, happened quite often.

CSS, KDE 4, Ebay/Paypal, waiting at McDonald's for my order to be cooked, ridiculous pricing for ridiculously cheap products/service and, finally, me (occasionally).

CSS is only a bother when you're first learning it. It confused the crap out of me until the CSS button in my brain clicked on. Now, I feel pretty confident in saying I know how to pull of just about anything possible with CSS, and I enjoy writing it more than it bothers me. Maybe I'm crazy, but I think I kind of enjoy web development...

I haven't missed the point. I am saying the "paradox of choice" could hit anybody in any situation. Doesn't have to be a fancy restaurant.

In her case, she might just have a lot of time on her hands and you've got every right to be peeved with her. I certainly would.

Short term disability insurance companies trying to convince you that there's a fixed chance that you're going to need their services. Ok, so maybe 25% of the people you've insured have had a need for it. That does NOT mean that there's a 25% chance that I'll need it. Knowing me, I'd say there's closer to a 0% chance. Stop trying to scare people into using your services. It's not cool.

Conservatives who can't tell when they're being mocked. Come on, guys. The whole point of Colbert's show is to make fun of the right wing for being a pack of fear-mongering, ignorant fools. The moment you take him seriously, you prove to the world (yet again) why we were so eager to kick you guys out of office. Then consider the likes of your leadership (Rush and Hannity), and call yourselves an influencial force? You can't even figure up from down. Stop trying. Oh, and Fox News? Just curl up and die already. You haven't spoken a word of truth in years. Stop deceiving half the country. READ: Nothing will get better as long as you continue lying to us about how bad it is.

Drivers who like to make left turns across a highway, and not even bother looking at oncoming traffic. Now you've stopped both sides of a very busy road, and you have the gall to wave thank you? Let's get this straight: Nobody here let you go. You forced your BMW out into the middle of traffic because you seem to believe you're more important than the rest of us and have some sort of inherent right to the road. I long for the day when somebody with an old, beat-up car with no life left decides to put you in your place, because you'll be paying for your own repairs. Chances are, though, you'll just ditch the car and drive your Hummer around, you white-coat, seven-figure, "I can't live on $52,000 a week while most of the country survives on $40,000 a year, and the world far less" abomination to society. It's you who's responsible for our crisis. You and your greed. You turn the people into fools, then play them as such, but refuse to take responsibility when some of us get smart and start asking questions. Be thankful I'm not in charge of this country. You'd have a lot less money.

Students who feel they can only be tested on material directly covered in class. I ready a story from a physics professor, in regards to a question he got into an arguement with his TA (he was a student himself at one point) over - why didn't the men fall off the moon? The TA seemed to think it was heavy boots... didn't seem to understand that the moon has its' own gravity. When this guy became a professor, he tossed in a couple questions about it in the test covering the section on gravity, and two of his students asked if they were going to continue to be tested over material they hadn't studied. Personally, I would have failed them on the spot.

I could go on for a while...

On a related note - travel insurance and the need for it ingrained into people's minds.

*gasp* "You're going on vacation without travel insurance?!"

Nothing's going to happen. You'd have to be very dumb or very unlucky to need it. Not having insurance isn't going to cause something to happen either. People have been surviving for years out there in the 'big bad world'.

LOL !!

"I pity da fool"
Thing is, I'm the fool.. I really liked the former one. It was so innocent
and sweet. But you could revert to it and still "sting like a bee" (oh, wait,
that was Ali, not Mr T).

We all wish computers could run/launch programs in the blink of an eye. A church where my wife was secretary had an older computer with Office on it. The preacher clicked on the Word(tm) button to run it so many times he had like 8 instances of it in the task bar. Clueless.

Health nuts. Being obsessive about germs does nothing but make your problems worse. Your body does have this funny little thing called an "immune system", and like most other things in your body, the more you use it, the stronger it gets. How does it get stronger? By fighting germs. If you make it a point to kill germs before they touch you, your immune system only gets weaker. The very reason I avoid medicine as much as possible.

Hey, did you hear the one about the 3 side effects of the swine flu shot?

That is indeed annoying. What's worse though is when you try to explain to them that it is wrong and they just do not see anything wrong with it. Are these people blind? Maybe they have seen too many fat Americans and are used to the whole stretched look of people in real life.
