Not really. The parents voluntarily put their children there. They're the idiots. Besides, anyone could jump that.

What's the context? There are some strange things done under the heading 'keeping the devil at bay', and this could be one of them.

That's not much distance for a motorcycle to jump. I saw a Robby Knevil (uncertain about spelling) jump on TV a number of years back that really impressed me. Quite a distance and done very well.

That's no big deal. Anyone can jump on a TV, they're only ever a few feet high.

Yes, that's true but the way he jumped on the TV was quite good.

You have a somewhat good point, but I still think he is a foolish person to even attempt such a thing.
I mean, if there were babies as such lying around in London (I know, a very realistic example, but stick with it for the sake of the point), would you jump over them?

Here's a short article from the BBC about it. Note that it says "Nobody appeared to get hurt in this year's festive event. (The underlining is mine). Does that imply a different outcome in the past? I sure hope not.

Frankly, it isn't the guy on the bike who is brave, but the other guys. If that guy screws up he gets some road rash and maybe a broken bone or two. As for the others....well, they'll be out of the gene pool.
@Martin: I don't see how you can read that any other way than how you have read it. There must have been other years, and it is very likely that there have been problems.

That was sort of my point but I probably shouldn't have said anything since I don't want to put down anyone's beliefs.

That's a good point, though I'd say that there are some who can't jump on TV's due to hip / leg problems.
I'll attempt it tonight and let you know if I succeed.

Re: Is he an idiot or not?
It might offend, but silly little rituals like jumping over babies to ward off the devil are just a case in point for the stupidity of organized religion and its ability to turn intelligent people into cattle. Do you think that any of those parents would let a stranger jump over their baby otherwise?

Re: Is he an idiot or not?
There was a story on the news last year (I think) about a motorbike stunt that went wrong. The rider got a volunteer from the crowd to lie face-up on the ground so that he could jump over his head on his bike. He didn't jump far enough and landed on the volunteer's face, killing him instantly.
Accidents happen - so don't put yourself (or your baby) in the firing line.

Re: Is he an idiot or not?
That guy that was supposed to be jumped over should have kept his eyes open and looking at least to some degree at the motorbike that was attempting to jump over him. He could then get out of the way if he saw that the bike wasn't going to make it. If you're going to risk your life in that way at least take some precautions.
