This decision was a long time in the making but was finally pushed over the edge by the inestimable skills of Mendhak. If I can generate images half as good as his then I'm happy.
It's the same camera as mend's actually, a Nikon D40.
£250 is a bloody good price for something this feature-packed. See here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wkB2nK0qQUM
That's incidentally the same amount as I payed for my previous Digicam, a trusty old reliable kodak affair.
Naturally I'll be getting a flickr account later on and sharing my renewed passion for landscape photography.
Can't wait!
6.1 mp? Hmm, needs more megapickles.
Just kidding. Nice buy. Hope to see some shots soon.

I've already lived 3 of your lifetimes. Cross referencing the pics EXIF info with police records show where you lifted the D40 from...
Nice pics btw....

I just bought the D60 today. I am so in love with it so far. After using point and shoots forever, it was a total shock all the options and settings. But after playing with it all day, I am starting to get a good handle on it.

I have an 18-200. It cost twice as much as the camera and is 3 times as heavy. I've had to hire an arm just to hold it when I go out.

I think I'll get a 55 -250. The 18 - 55 I got with mine is ok but a bit limited. But first I have to rob someone.

Sure, why not? ...oh you mean the tripod. Yeah I took it to Carsington Reservoir yesterday and attempted to take a panorama of the shoreline. It was a bit overcast so the pictures are a bit crappy but it certainly works well.
Nobody batted an eyelid at me. I think people generally try not to be conspicious when there's a photographographer around, in case they are immortalised in image form with a funny look on their faces.
I made myself a shoulder strap for my tripod out of an old sports-holdall clip-on strap. Use one end to clip onto the tripod's carry hook and the other end of the strap (with the sliding length adjuster buckle) can be used like a noose that you can put around the tripod's legs to hold them all together. It's very comfy and inconspicuous. Nobody seems to notice it.
The reservoir was packed with thousands of people, many of them photographographers themselves! I saw a couple of others with tripods too, although I didn't get chance to strike up conversations with them. Maybe next time, photographographers are a friendly lot.

I wonder if anyone has ever thought of or written an app for a Smartphone that will pull photos off a camera then let you upload then to Flickr over 3G? Hmm

It's always been photographography. And map makers are cartographographers. And there's a tennis player called Steffi Graffograff.

Going to go buy the 55-200 lens today. Got frustrated yesterday when there was some possible great bird (some Swallows I think) shots I could take, but I could not get close enough without chasing them off. Damn anti social birds!

Mendhak, how did you get that yellow glow on the picture of tulips? Or was the light that way already?
Is there a setting on my camera to change the tint?

Re: Photographography
Somewhat fast shutter speed (1/800), wide angle and the sun was setting and was visible directly behind the tree in the middle. You can get some pretty good effects if you point the camera at the setting/rising sun at fast shutter speeds and different apertures. Same applies to objects between the lens and the sun, you get good effects.
Don't know what camera you have or how to change filters on it, sorry... Are you a D40tard like us?

Yea I bought a compact P&S (Canon G10). My pictures are really great outdoors on a bright sunny day (with low ISO). But otherwise the pictures aren't really that great.
Next time I might buy a DSLR (Nikon seems to have the best reputation).
But for now, for my vacation to China, I wanted a good quality compact for traveling.

Re: Photographography
I've found that all compacts suffer at nighttime, I guess that's something you'll have to accept... or just find something to stabilize it on and make sure you don't shake. Didn't you buy yours just recently? Have you looked at all the settings available to you? I say that because if you mess around enough you can get good non-daylight photos. Look at a few examples.
Where are you going in China?
