You might be a student trying to cheat if...
... the title of your thread asking for help begins with "how to" or some phonetic variation.
... the title of your thread contains no grammatical formatting of any kind.
... your user name contains the same character repeated at least three times.
... your user name starts with "MaximilianMayrhofe".
Anything else you've noticed?

Re: You might be a student trying to cheat if...
If you ask directly for the answers to the questions, not tips on how to get to the answers.
E.G. i have to code this programs its a program where you store it's these values into a database i can't give you more help since the source code is top secret. Can any1 help? thx
Also, questions like this:
I have these questions lol they're really easy if u get them right u get a prize:
1. what does object oriented programming mean
2. what is te diffrence between java and c
3. what is dynamic programming
4. what is static programming
5. what is difference between 3 andd 4
6. how does assembers work
7. do compilers actually make the program or run the program code line by like
8. give code examples of object oriented code with this example:
[long winded scenario of objects that can be easily applied in any OOP language]
9. etc
What is worse with these types is that they generally steal your answers and never give you any sort of prize. I label it mentally under the same heading as "Nigerian Fraud Con"

You ask how many liters of water a bag can hold, and you think it's fun.

A common thing that I see is that the username will contain "Help" somewhere in it, like "HelpMii" or "GiveHelpPl0x." Another tip off is post count is 0 or 1.

You can also look at a user's feedback. I know some of us don't have much, such as myself, but there are people with post counts in the hundreds that have no rep. That signals to me that they are always asking for help, and when they get their answer, they vanish again.
Another thing you can do is hang around in the chit-chat area. Most of the people I've seen post in here have a multitude of posts in other forums helping users.
If my post helped you, please rate it!

Re: You might be a student trying to cheat if...
I occasionally traverse the ASP.NET and C# forums to offer what help I can... but I'm often too amazed at the number of "plz to hlp" thread titles that I don't even want to open them. I think this board is gaining notoriety as a place to get easy answers for homework, and I don't think that's what it's really about...

Actually, I think that with the volume of activity this board sees, it comes up a lot at the top of searches so people stop here first. I'm guilty of it too.... I tend to go through the links on the first couple of pages.... the ones that float to the top get the clicks.

Re: You might be a student trying to cheat if...
That's the point of a relevancy search... the more relevant results are easier to get to. The point is that there are enough people just blindly handing out code for this forum to be a big draw to people who don't give a rip what it does, as long as it works. I think I can pretty confidently say that all of us who have gained success professionally, in part because of assistance from VBF, gained it because we were taught what it did instead of just taking a block of code and plugging it in to an application. Our intern at work came on the job with nothing but a couple college classes and an interest in coding. Now he's cranking out some pretty slick stuff, all on his own. Why? Because I make it a point to teach him what's actually going on in the code of mine he's trying to replicate. He gets the fundamentals, then starts putting the pieces together for himself, and now he doesn't even need my help. Total amateur to competent in multiple areas, in half a year, and not because of school. School taught him some of the basics, but just like it was for me, it wasn't until I got on the job that I actually started learning how to properly make use of .Net.

Which reminds me of the 32'000 (approx.) users on the members list with 0 posts... Some of them joined back in 2003 even without a SINGLE POST!

1. object oriented programming means programming orientations into objects (i.e. North, East, West, South)
2. java is a name given to coffee by some programmers, typically made between 5 and 10 times stronger than coffee normal people drink, c is the third letter of the English alphabet.
3. dynamic programming is usually performed on the move, in a car, on the train or on a plane in an attempt to finish it before you make your presentation in 45 minutes.
4. static prrogramming is usually carried out sitting at a desk, without moving for hours. For best results the programming should be scrunched up underneath the desk with their head on a pillow.
5. 3 is usually formed from two curves. 4 is usually formed by 3 straight lines.
6. assemblers work by putting machinery together to a defined plan so that it does not break down, until just after the guarantee runs out.
7. compilers make the program that does not work, an interpreter would run the program code line by line, although not in the order.
8. for examples please see Object Orientated Programming examples
9. etc is the new name for the successor to c, this is being developed by mendhak, wossname & robdog, please redirect all queries regarding this to MartinLiss.

Next time I see an example of such a post that I mocked earlier, I'm definitely going to quote Torc's answers. It should suffice.

LightFusion is infringing our copyright! Nevermind, I'm making those two idiots do all the work and then releasing it as public domain 3 days before the scheduled RTM.
