I'm convinced that the only standards M$ follows is their own.

I don't know if it's a blessing or a curse that the only browser I have to support at my work is IE6.

IE8 is the most standard compliant browser they have released.

I am going to download it, take a screen shot, print it out and wipe my arse with it...

...I cannot afford toilet paper

In all seriousness, I am not impressed that there is a button to render in IE7 mode... if a website breaks then let it, support standards and you will be fine.

Re: IE8 - RTM today

My site is 100% standards compliant right now, and it looks like crap in IE6. So I let it. I don't care. They shouldn't be using it anyway. Because of the way it's built, it looks pretty damn close in IE7. It's right in Fx, Chrome, and Opera. So IE can suck it.

After viewing TS' site in both Opera 10 (alpha), and IE8 I can say that they look identical! I cant tell the difference between the browsers.

The same thing happened with C++ compilers after the ANSI standard came out. Nobody was fully compliant, then some were, then most were, etc. The same happens with browsers, though they are a larger part of some companies than others.

Is that because you gouged your eyeballs out with a swizzel stick after looking at the site? Cause if that's the reason, I don't want to check.

It's about damn time too.

Since I am running Windows 7 at the moment, I can't see a download link for IE 8 for Windows 7. Will Windows 7 automatically update IE8 to release candidate version?

Either way, I'll be downloading the Vista 64bit version.

Re: IE8 - RTM today

There is a note for Windows 7 on the Other locales and versions downloads page:
We're sorry, but you won't be able to download Internet Explorer 8 for Windows 7 Beta at this time

Windows 7 Beta already includes a pre-release candidate version of Internet Explorer 8 that is optimized for that release. Windows 7 enables unique features and functionality in Internet Explorer 8 including Windows Touch and Jump Lists which require additional product tests to ensure we are providing the best Windows experience for our customers. We will continue to update the version of Internet Explorer 8 running on Windows 7 as the development cycles of Windows 7 progress and plan to include the final version of Internet Explorer 8 in the release candidate version of Windows 7 later this year. For the latest information on Windows 7 visit the Windows 7 site.

Re: IE8 - RTM today

View any site with ease
Internet Explorer 8

Now you can quickly display websites that were designed for older browsers. If you’re looking at a page and the text or images aren’t lined up right, just use the new Compatibility View button next to the Refresh button on the Address Bar.
What changes are there in IE8 css? If there are none what is the point of upgrading to IE8 from IE7?

Re: IE8 - RTM today

I'm a complete amateur in this area(as well as many other areas). If I download and install IE8 can I still run IE7 and other IE versions? I recently installed FireFox. I know I have the option of running IE7 or FireFox but I'm not clear on running different IE versions on one computer.

IE is (sadly) a Windows component, so it tends to not install multiple versions... it replaces itself, just like Windows Media Player. Out with the old, in with the new.

That's a load. My site is also built according to exact standards, looks perfect everywhere, except IE8. (IE6 / 7 have minor differences, but is still good enough)

Same here! This might be the wrong place to ask this (suppose I should have asked in the Web Developers of VBForums group I created) but what are the standards for IE8?

You can, however, remove it again to get back to IE 7.

Then it's about time they woke up. The question is, does it still display only the HTML that was loaded from the server? Or does it also keep up with DOM modifications? Firebug FTW
