Re: Windows update -- keeps installing
I dont know if its the same update but recently at work a lot of our machines have been failing to install an update and it causes the machines to never finish shutting down because they just sit there on the "installing update 1 of 1, please do not turn off your computer it will shutdown automatically". We even left one of them overnight and it still said that in the morning

Re: Windows update -- keeps installing
Pardon my ignorance but how do I hide the update? I can't just delete it?
I don't want to hide all of toolbar icons.
Chris,
This is an "XML cores services 4.0 service pack v2"? and "something", maybe this, has been a real nightmare for one of my PC's past 2 days.
Constant crashing, I can't access my F10 bios setup, did a virus and malware scan all ok.
That's the weird part --
I scanned the piss out of the hard drive (for an hour) with anti virus and it didn't crash at all.
It also won't crash when the system is idle.
But the minute I bring up any software or do any normal activity it goes black and shuts down.
I've tested the ram, video card -- everything. I've never had a problem like this.
I have a feeling it's that windows update.
I turned off automatic updates....from now on, I' going to pick and choose
what to install.

I was thinking the same thing but Microsoft didn't put a link to that info in the above article.
Edit:
To hide an update:
1. Go to Windows update page.
2. View " View available up dates".
3. Select an update, right click and select hide update.
From Windows help:
Restore and install hidden updates
Hidden updates are updates you've asked Windows not to notify you about or install automatically. To enhance the security and performance of your computer, restore all important and recommended updates.
Click to open Windows Update.
In the left pane, click Restore hidden updates.
Select the updates that you want to install, and then click Restore. To see if you've selected all important and recommended updates, check the information in the Type column, next to each update name. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
Windows will check for updates, and then prompt you to install the updates that you have restored and any new updates that might be available.
Note
Some updates that you try to restore might not appear in the list of updates that Windows offers you. This happens only when Windows finds a more recent update that addresses the same problem as the update you tried to restore.
