    Resolved [RESOLVED] Database Questions

It seems that more and more questions in the Visual Basic .Net Forum have to do with databases. Shouldn't hose questions be posed in the Database Development Forum?

    Re: Database Questions

If you deem that a certain thread is more appropriate to another section you can use the Report Bad Post so that moderators/admins will move it if it really needs to be moved.

    Re: Database Questions

It's on the left of each post (except your own) with this icon:

The word "bad" is rarely apt, just think of it as a way to get moderator/admin attention to a thread (often quicker than PM's, as all mod's/admins can see the reports).

@si - there are so many DB questions in the Visual Basic .Net Forum, should i be flagging them all?

    Re: Database Questions

so i went and pushed the button and saw
"Note: This is ONLY to be used to report spam, advertising messages, and problematic (harassment, fighting, or rude) posts."

it doesn't say anything about messages in the wrong forum.

    Re: Database Questions

The icon and text are part of the forum software, and unfortunately are relatively hard to change (particularly when the people who would need to do it are in charge of many forum sites, and need to remember to re-do it each time the software gets upgraded).

We don't see it as just for "bad" things, and we are happy for people to use it any time that a moderator/admin should be notified - and many people use it for reporting threads in the wrong forum (or for telling us things like "it seems ok at the moment, but could potentially get bad later").

It is very useful for us, as we then get to see (without needing to check all new threads first) what needs our attention - and in a way that not only gives us your comments, but also links to the post/thread/author, and includes a copy of the message. All of that is in a new (private!) thread where we can discuss it with other moderators if needed. For the moderator(s) assigned to the forum (so for the DB forum, that is just me) they also get a copy in what is effectively a PM.

While we don't always explicitly thank people for notifying us, we are grateful for it.

You can if you want to - but note that sometimes the .Net forum is apt for questions involving databases to some degree, so there will be times that we don't move a thread.

I haven't found the threads you mentioned yet, but based on titles alone I suspect "[2005] Moving TableAdapters out of the main form" is one that would stay where it is - as the issues are probably just about the .Net code, and not actually about database interaction as such.

I feel that I use that report button to report misplaced threads so often, I almost get embarrassed thinking about it!

    Re: Database Questions

You aren't the only one - a couple of people have included something to the effect of "sorry if I'm reporting too many threads!" in their comments.

..but from our point of view someone can't report too many - we really are happy for it to be used as often as needed (even in the rare cases where one thread gets reported by 3 different people!).

From our point of view, the 'worst' cases are where nothing needs to be done, in which case it only takes a few seconds to check and mark it resolved.

So to everyone who reports threads, thanks every single time - even if we don't explicitly take the time to say it.
