    Can't Disable Schedule Defrag

I have a Vista Home Premium system. Everyday it wants to run the disk defrag. I keep unchecking the "Run on a schedule" in the disk defrag screen. I also keep removing the defrag folder from the Task Scheduler. But within a day the check mark is back on "Run on a schedule" and the defrag tasks are back in the Task Scheduler.

Can anyone shed some light on this issue, I'm in the dark.

    thanks

    Re: Can't Disable Schedule Defrag

Are you using any other disk utilities? Maybe it is setting it back...

    koolsid,

Not as far as I know. I use AVG sometimes but this seems to happen wether AVG is active or not.

    Re: Can't Disable Schedule Defrag

Ok Try This... I had to reboot into Vista to check this

Click on the Start menu - Accessories - System Tools - Task Scheduler
Navigate to Task Scheduler(Local)-Task Scheduler Library-Microsoft-Windows-Defrag (See Picture)
You'll see Schedule Defrag. right Click on it to access it's properties
Go to the "Triggers" pane in the Properties Window
Select the task and click the button Delete. Click Ok

Also Check out the settings Tab in the properties windows... if you select any setting in the Task Settings and press F1, it will tell you in detail about each one of them....

    Re: Can't Disable Schedule Defrag

defrag is going to put the tasks back if you haven't disabled it properly. Have you tried making sure you're running from an administrator account?

Also, just to make sure i understand what you're doing, you:
    1. Typed "defrag" in the search box
    2. UNchecked the "run on a schedule (recommended)"
    3. Clicked "OK"

Note, that if you have disabled "run on a schedule" then the next time you try to run disk defragmenter it will automatically assume you're trying to launch a manual defrag and start analyzing the disks.

If you want to use your own program you could always just delete the program.

    Re: Can't Disable Schedule Defrag

    Lord Orwell,

I'm the administrator, I'm the only person who uses this machine.

I don't understand what you mean "Typed defrag in the search box". I do it like this,

Control Panel>System and Maintenance>Administrative Tools>Defrag Your Hard Drive. then I UnCheck "run on schedule".

I don't want to run another type of defrag program. I just don't want my disk to be defraged automatically. I would prefer to do it when I'm ready.

    Thanks for the reply.

    Re: Can't Disable Schedule Defrag

Ok wes, try this. It might sound repitative but it is not...

Go to Control Panel. On the left hand part, you will see two options... "Control panel home" and "Classic View". Ensure that you are in "control panel home".

Now on the top right hand corner you will see the search box, right below the "X". Type Defrag there and press enter. You will be presented with the Administrative tools options. Elevate as needed. navigate to Control Panel\System and Maintenance\Administrative Tools. Open the task scheduler and delete the task(s). Click "OK"

This might sound repitative but we went thru a different channel...

See if this helps.... We will take it from there...

    Re: Can't Disable Schedule Defrag

    koolsid,

Never knew that the search worked like that in the Control Panel, Thanks that will come in handy. But no luck with removing the defrag task from the task scheduler. I've deleted them many times but they keep coming back.
I'll have to do some more research on the problem.

    thanks

I am not going to give up!!!!

I will try and experiment with my laptop again in the morning...

By the way with the last method did you need to elevate?

    Re: Can't Disable Schedule Defrag

    koolsid,

I didn't understand what you meant by "elevate", also there is no "OK" button, it asks me if I'm sure I want to delete this task and I click YES. Are you using Vista? I think I've solved the problem by deleting the task triggers.

    Thanks

    Re: Can't Disable Schedule Defrag

    Elevate is Vista only

Anyways if you were able to solve by deleting triggers then I guess Post # 5 actually helped
